Pondicherry's own story runs from an ancient port trading with the Roman world to the French colonial town you see today. Drive out of town and the layers keep coming: Pallava rock-cut monuments at Mahabalipuram, a hill fortress at Gingee and the Chola temples of the Kaveri delta. If you enjoy history, this corner of South India rewards a few extra days.

The good thing about basing yourself in Pondicherry is that most of these sites can be seen on day trips, returning each night to the same hotel. Only the Chola temples and Madurai really need an overnight stop.

Heritage in Pondicherry

Start with a walk through White Town, the old French quarter of straight streets, colonnaded villas and walled gardens. Nearby, the Ananda Ranga Pillai Mansion was home to the 18th-century diarist who worked for the French governor Dupleix. The Pondicherry Museum displays finds from Arikamedu, the ancient port south of town where excavations uncovered Roman pottery and beads. The Old Lighthouse and French War Memorial sit along the seafront.

Forts and monuments within a day's drive

• Gingee (about 68 km) – a fort spread across three hills, with a steep climb to the citadel on Rajagiri. Go early to avoid the midday heat.
• Mahabalipuram (about 95 km) – the Shore Temple, Five Rathas and Arjuna's Penance, together a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Kanchipuram (about 120 km) – the Pallava-era Kailasanathar Temple and a long silk-weaving tradition.
• Thanjavur (about 170 km) – the Brihadisvara Temple, the palace complex and the Saraswathi Mahal Library.

Best time and tips

November to February is best: forts and open-air monuments are exposed, and the climb at Gingee is hard work in the heat of April and May. During the northeast monsoon (roughly October to December) expect some washed-out days, but the monuments are quieter.

• Carry water and wear proper shoes for Gingee – the steps are uneven.
• Protected monuments run by the Archaeological Survey of India charge entry fees; fees and hours change, so check before you go.
• A local guide makes a real difference at Mahabalipuram and Thanjavur.
