The Sripuram Golden Temple near Vellore draws visitors from all over South India for its gold-covered shrine to Sri Lakshmi Narayani. From Pondicherry it is about 165 km each way, which makes a full but manageable day trip by car.

Sripuram: what to expect
The temple complex was built by the Sri Narayani Peedam trust at Thirumalaikodi, below a hill on the southern side of Vellore, and consecrated in August 2007. The shrine is covered in gold foil, and it is reached along a star-shaped walkway that winds through lawns and gardens, with sayings on boards along the route. Walking the whole path to the shrine and back takes a while, so wear comfortable footwear up to the point where shoes are left.
At the time of writing darshan is from 8 am to 8 pm daily. General entry is free; a paid queue is offered at busy times. Phones, cameras and bags are generally deposited before entry, so carry little. The shrine is lit up after dark, and some visitors prefer an evening visit – ask us and we can reverse the day.
Dress and etiquette
Wear modest clothes that cover shoulders and knees; shorts, sleeveless tops and similar clothing may not be accepted. Footwear is left at the counters. Photography is not allowed in the inner areas, so take photos only where permitted. Carry water and a hat for the open parts of the path, which can be hot around midday.
Vellore Fort and Jalakandeswarar temple
According to Tamil Nadu Tourism, Vellore Fort was built in the 16th century by chieftains under the Vijayanagara ruler Sadashiva Raya, and later passed through the hands of the Bijapur Sultanate, the Marathas, the Nawabs and the British. Its wide moat and granite walls are still intact. Inside, the Jalakandeswarar temple is known for its finely carved pillars and mandapa, and the fort also holds a church, a mosque and a Government Museum.
The fort grounds are open from 8 am to 6 pm at the time of writing. The museum keeps shorter hours with a lunch break and is closed on some days, including public holidays and, according to several sources, Fridays – check before you go. The temple follows its own morning and evening puja hours and usually closes in the early afternoon.

Vellore is one of the hotter towns in Tamil Nadu, and April to June can be very uncomfortable on the open paths and fort walls. November to February is the pleasant season. Weekdays are quieter at Sripuram; weekends and festival days can mean long queues.
