Pondicherry sits right on the Bay of Bengal, so the sea is part of almost every trip here. The beaches are not all the same, though. The town seafront is a rocky promenade made for walking, while the sandy beaches lie a short drive south or north of the centre. Further along the coast you can combine a beach stop with temples and monuments.

Beaches in and around Pondicherry town
Promenade Beach is the seafront of the old town, lined by a sea wall of boulders rather than sand. It is the place for sunrise and evening walks, and Goubert Avenue beside it is closed to motor traffic in the evenings and early mornings (roughly 6 pm to 7.30 am at the time of writing). The French War Memorial and the Old Lighthouse are on the same stretch.
For sand, most visitors head south. Paradise Beach is reached by boat through the backwaters from Chunnambar Boat House. Eden Beach at Chinna Veerampattinam was the first beach in the Union Territory to receive the international Blue Flag certification for cleanliness and facilities. Pondy Marina is a developed beach with food stalls, popular with local families in the evening.
Coastal trips further afield
Heading north along the East Coast Road, Mahabalipuram (about 95 km) pairs a beach with the UNESCO-listed Shore Temple and rock-cut monuments. To the south, Velankanni combines the shrine with a long beach, and Rameswaram and Kanyakumari are the classic coastal ends of a longer Tamil Nadu tour.

Best time and safety tips
November to February is the most comfortable time for the beach: cooler, less humid and generally calm after the northeast monsoon, which brings most of Pondicherry's rain between October and December. March to June is hot, so plan beach time for early morning or late afternoon.
The Bay of Bengal here can have strong currents and waves. Swim only where it is clearly allowed and lifeguards or safety staff are present, stay out of the water on the rocky Promenade, and follow any flags or warnings. Boat timings to Paradise Beach change with the season and the weather – check before you go.
