This tour follows Kerala’s coast from north to south: the old trading port of Kochi, the backwater villages of Kumarakom, the cliff-top beach town of Varkala and the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram. It is a one-way road trip from Pondicherry in a private car with the same driver throughout, ending at Thiruvananthapuram’s airport or railway station.

Where our Munnar, Thekkady & Alleppey tour heads for the hills, this one stays close to sea level: history, water, birds and beaches.

Who this tour suits

Couples, families and friends who have seen Tamil Nadu and want to continue into Kerala without flying, and anyone who prefers slow days to long sightseeing lists. After the first two travel days, no drive is longer than about four hours. It suits honeymooners well, and it works for older travellers too, as the walking is mostly on level ground.

Route at a glance

  • Pondicherry → Salem → Coimbatore: about 380 km
  • Coimbatore → Palakkad → Thrissur → Kochi: about 195 km
  • Kochi → Kumarakom: about 60 km
  • Kumarakom → Kottayam → Kollam → Varkala: about 140 km
  • Varkala → Thiruvananthapuram: about 50 km

Why this route

Kochi is around 560 km from Pondicherry, too far for one comfortable day, so we stop overnight in Coimbatore. Entering Kerala through the Palakkad gap is the easiest crossing of the Western Ghats, with no steep ghat road. From Kochi the trip moves south in short hops and ends at Thiruvananthapuram, which has good flight and train connections, so you don’t need to drive back the same way.

Kumarakom and its birds

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, run by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, is a small patch of wooded land on the shore of Vembanad Lake. Resident water birds nest here in the monsoon months, and migratory birds arrive from the north between November and February. Go early in the morning, bring binoculars and wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Timings can change, so check at the gate. For more places to see birds, see our bird watching guide.

Temple visits in Thiruvananthapuram

At the time of writing, only Hindus are admitted to the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Men must wear a mundu or dhoti and remove their shirts; women should wear a saree, or an ankle-length skirt with a blouse. Trousers, churidars and short clothes are not allowed. Dhotis can usually be hired near the entrance. The temple closes from around noon to 5 pm, and darshan times vary on festival days, so check the temple’s official website before you go.

Best season

October to March is the most comfortable time, with calm seas at Varkala and migratory birds at Kumarakom. April and May are hot and humid. The southwest monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain; the backwaters are very green, but beach activities are limited and the sea is rough. Many travellers also come in the monsoon for Ayurveda, which Kerala traditionally links with the Malayalam month of Karkidakam (July–August).

Customising the tour

  • Add a night on a houseboat at Kumarakom or Alleppey, booked as an optional extra
  • Add Kanyakumari (about 90 km beyond Thiruvananthapuram) and return to Pondicherry via Madurai
  • Swap Varkala for Kovalam if you prefer a more developed beach
  • Start the tour in Kochi if you arrive by air
  • Hotels, homestays and resorts in budget, standard or premium categories

What to pack

Light cotton clothes for the humid coast, a hat and sunscreen, and a light rain jacket or umbrella in any season – Kerala gets showers even outside the monsoon. Bring comfortable sandals for Fort Kochi’s streets and the Varkala cliff path, and insect repellent for the backwaters. For temple visits, pack a mundu or dhoti for men and a saree or long skirt for women, or plan to hire one near the temple. Binoculars make the morning at the bird sanctuary far more rewarding.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Kochi from Pondicherry by road?

Kochi is about 560 km from Pondicherry via Salem, Coimbatore and Palakkad. We split the drive with a night in Coimbatore: about 380 km on the first day and 195 km on the second.

What is the best time to visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary?

Early morning between November and February, when migratory birds are present. Resident water birds nest in the sanctuary during the monsoon months.

Can non-Hindus enter the Padmanabhaswamy Temple?

At the time of writing, no – only Hindus may enter, and a strict dress code applies. Non-Hindu visitors can see the gopuram and the temple tank from outside.

Is a houseboat included in this tour?

No. A houseboat cruise or shikara ride at Kumarakom is optional and charged separately; we can suggest options when you plan your trip.

Can the tour return to Pondicherry instead of ending in Thiruvananthapuram?

Yes, but the drive back is about 600 km, so it adds at least two days. Many guests return via Kanyakumari and Madurai with overnight stops.

Day-wise itinerary

  1. 1
Day 1: Pondicherry – Coimbatore (about 380 km, 7–8 hours)

Leave Pondicherry early and drive via Villupuram, Salem and Erode to Coimbatore, with meal stops on the way. This first day breaks the long journey to Kerala into two manageable halves. Evening at leisure. Overnight in Coimbatore.

  2. 2
Day 2: Coimbatore – Kochi (about 195 km, 4.5–5 hours)

Cross into Kerala at Walayar and continue via Palakkad and Thrissur to Kochi; the Kerala interstate permit for the car is paid at the border. Check in at Fort Kochi or Ernakulam by early afternoon. In the evening, walk to the beach front near Vasco da Gama Square to watch the Chinese fishing nets being lowered and raised as the light fades. Overnight in Kochi.

  3. 3
Day 3: Fort Kochi and Mattancherry

Spend the day in the old port. See St. Francis Church, built by Portuguese friars in 1503, where Vasco da Gama was buried for 14 years before his remains were taken to Lisbon, and the Santa Cruz Basilica. Drive a few minutes to Mattancherry for the palace built around 1545 and known for its Hindu murals, then Jew Town and the Paradesi Synagogue of 1568, which closes on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays; the palace also closes one day a week, so we plan the order around your dates. In the evening you can attend a Kathakali performance at one of the cultural centres. Overnight in Kochi.

  4. 4
Day 4: Kochi – Kumarakom (about 60 km, 2 hours)

A short drive south-east brings you to Kumarakom, a cluster of islands and canals on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, Kerala's largest lake. Check in to a lakeside hotel or homestay and spend the afternoon on the water – a country-boat or shikara ride through the canals, or a day cruise on a houseboat, can be arranged as an optional extra. Overnight in Kumarakom.

  5. 5
Day 5: Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary – Varkala (about 140 km, 3.5–4 hours)

Walk the trails of the 14-acre Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary at opening time, when herons, egrets, darters and kingfishers are most active; migratory birds are most numerous from November to February. After breakfast, drive via Kottayam and Kollam to Varkala. Spend the evening on the North Cliff, where the path along the edge is lined with cafés and small shops, and watch the sunset over the Arabian Sea. Overnight in Varkala.

  6. 6
    Day 6: Varkala

A slow day. Go down to Papanasam beach below the cliffs, visit the Janardhana Swamy Temple on the hill above the beach road, and drive about 3 km to Sivagiri Mutt, where the social reformer Sree Narayana Guru is buried. The afternoon is free for the beach or an optional Ayurveda session at a centre of your choice. Swim only where lifeguards are posted – the sea here can be rough, especially during the monsoon. Overnight in Varkala.

  7. 7
    Day 7: Varkala – Thiruvananthapuram (about 50 km, 1.5 hours) – drop

Drive to Thiruvananthapuram in the morning. Hindu visitors can join the darshan at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, which has a strict dress code and closes around midday; others can see its towering gopuram from outside. Visit the Napier Museum and the surrounding gardens if time allows, then take your drop at Thiruvananthapuram airport or Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station.
