The hills of the Western and Eastern Ghats are South India's plantation country. Tea covers the higher, open slopes of the Nilgiris, Munnar and the Anamalais in neat, clipped rows, while coffee grows lower down under a canopy of shade trees, often mixed with pepper and cardamom. A plantation trip means cool air, estate walks, factory visits and fresh tea or filter coffee at the source – and every region below can be reached by road from Pondicherry.
Tea country

Coffee country
- Coorg (Kodagu) – the largest coffee-growing district in India, with many estate homestays run by planter families.

Best season
October to March is the most comfortable time in all the plantation hills, with clear views and cool nights. Coffee is harvested roughly from November to February, when you may see ripe red cherries on the bushes and beans drying in estate yards. Tea is plucked for much of the year, with lush growth after the rains. April and May are popular for escaping the heat of the plains, but hill towns get crowded. The southwest monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain to the Western Ghats estates, especially Coorg, Wayanad and Valparai.
Planning tips
- Estates are private property – walk only where you have permission, or join a guided estate walk.
- Factory tours and tastings are run by individual estates; timings and access change, so check before you go.
- Leeches are common in wet months; leech socks or salt help on estate paths.
- Elephants and gaur often cross estate roads at dawn and dusk – stay in the car and let your driver wait.
- Buy tea and coffee from estate outlets or reputable shops rather than roadside stalls selling unlabelled packs.
- Hill roads are slow: plan on 30–40 km an hour on ghat sections.

Which is the nearest tea plantation to Pondicherry?
The closest large tea areas are in the Nilgiris (Ooty and Coonoor) and around Valparai, both about eight to ten hours by road. Yercaud, about five to six hours away, is known for coffee rather than tea.
