Pondicherry itself is flat, but you do not have to go far to find something to climb. Within two hours there are granite fort hills; within five or six there are small hill plateaus with forest trails; and a longer road trip takes you to the Western Ghats, where the peaks rise close to 2,000 metres. Most of what is on offer is day hiking rather than expedition trekking – ideal if you want some effort and a view without special gear.
Close to Pondicherry: forts and sacred hills
- Gingee (about 67 km) – the steep climb to the Rajagiri citadel at Gingee Fort is the best half-day workout near Pondicherry. Start when the gates open; the rock gets hot quickly.
- Tiruvannamalai (about 108 km) – a footpath leads up the lower slopes of Arunachala to Virupaksha Cave and Skandashram. Access to the higher parts of the hill is controlled by the authorities and is often closed, especially during festivals and after heavy rain.

Hill treks in Tamil Nadu
Yelagiri has an easy trek up Swamimalai, its highest hill, and paragliding and adventure camps in season. Kolli Hills is reached by a ghat road with dozens of hairpin bends, and the walk down roughly 1,000 steps to Agaya Gangai falls is a proper leg-burner on the way back up. In Kodaikanal and Ooty, forest trails are managed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, which now takes bookings for guided treks through its Trek Tamil Nadu portal.
Bigger adventures in Karnataka
- Hampi – scramble up Matanga Hill for sunrise over the ruins, and walk the boulder-lined river path to the Vittala Temple.
- Chikkamagaluru – Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak, plus forest treks such as Kudremukh. Forest department treks in Karnataka must be booked on the official Aranya Vihaara site, with daily limits.

Best season
October to February is the best time: cooler mornings, clear views and dry paths. From March to May, start at dawn and finish by mid-morning, especially on exposed rock at Gingee and Hampi. During the monsoon – June to September in the Western Ghats, October to December on the Tamil Nadu side – trails are slippery, leeches appear in the forests, and many routes are closed. Always check that a trail is open before you set out.
