Between the 7th and 9th centuries, the Pallava kings turned granite into temples, and two of their cities lie within an easy drive of Pondicherry. Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) was their port, and its rock-cut shrines and reliefs form the UNESCO World Heritage Site Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram. Kanchipuram was their capital and remains one of the great temple towns of Tamil Nadu.
This two-day tour links them with an overnight stay by the sea, so you see Mahabalipuram without rushing and reach Kanchipuram early, before the temples close for the afternoon.
Who this tour is for
Anyone interested in architecture, sculpture, history or photography, and families who want to combine a beach town with a day of temples. Mahabalipuram involves walking on sand and uneven rock, and a few low climbs to the cave temples; Kanchipuram is flat but involves a lot of walking inside large temple compounds.
Route at a glance
- Pondicherry → Mahabalipuram along the East Coast Road, about 96 km
- Mahabalipuram: Shore Temple, Five Rathas, Arjuna’s Penance, cave temples, Krishna’s Butter Ball
- Mahabalipuram → Kanchipuram, about 65 km
- Kanchipuram: Kailasanathar, Ekambareswarar, Kamakshi Amman, Varadharaja Perumal, silk weavers
- Kanchipuram → Pondicherry, about 110 km
Why do the route this way
Mahabalipuram’s monuments are open-air and can be visited from morning till evening, so they suit an arrival day. Kanchipuram’s temples, on the other hand, follow puja timings with a long midday closure, so the best plan is to arrive there in the morning. Staying overnight in Mahabalipuram does exactly that, and it also means you can see the Shore Temple in early-morning light before the day-trippers arrive from Chennai.
The Shore Temple and Kanchipuram’s Kailasanathar Temple were both built under the same Pallava king, Rajasimha (Narasimhavarman II), in the early 8th century, so seeing them on consecutive days shows how the style moved from the coast to the capital.
Best season
November to February is the best time, with cooler mornings for walking around the monuments. The Mamallapuram Dance Festival is usually held against the backdrop of Arjuna’s Penance in December–January; dates vary each year, so check with Tamil Nadu Tourism. Summer afternoons (April–June) are hot on the exposed rock, so we start early and schedule a long lunch.
How to customise it
- Do it as a long single day (about 280 km) if you are short of time – Mahabalipuram highlights only
- Add a night in Kanchipuram and continue to Tiruvannamalai, or combine with our Pancha Bhoota Sthalam tour
- Start from or end in Chennai; pickup or drop at Chennai airport can be arranged
- Beach resorts or town hotels in budget, standard or premium categories

What you will see at Mahabalipuram
The Shore Temple is one of the earliest structural stone temples in South India, with two shrines to Shiva and one to Vishnu facing the sea. The Five Rathas are carved from single granite outcrops, each in a different style, and were never consecrated for worship. Arjuna’s Penance is a vast relief cut into two boulders, crowded with gods, animals and people around a natural cleft that may represent the descent of the Ganga. Nearby, the rock-cut mandapas show panels of Durga fighting the buffalo demon and Vishnu reclining on the serpent. Allow a full afternoon, or hire a licensed guide to understand the stories behind the carvings.
Dress code and practical tips
In Kanchipuram, wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and be ready to remove footwear at each temple entrance. Non-Hindus may not be allowed into some inner sanctums; the outer halls and corridors are open to all. At Mahabalipuram, wear a hat and comfortable shoes with grip for the rock surfaces, and carry water. Photography is allowed at the Mahabalipuram monuments; rules differ at each Kanchipuram temple.
