Our Lady of Angels Church, officially the Église de Notre Dame des Anges, is the church of White Town. It stands on Rue Dumas a block from the sea, with a pastel façade, twin square towers and a small garden in front holding a statue of Joan of Arc. It is one of the most photographed buildings in Pondicherry and an easy stop on any walk along the seafront.

It is also a living link to the French past. This is the only church in Pondicherry city that holds mass in three languages: French, Tamil and English.

History of the church

The church was built in 1855, during the reign of Napoleon III, to designs by the French engineer Louis Guerre, the same engineer behind Pondicherry’s 1836 lighthouse. Its Greco-Roman design is said to have been inspired by the basilica at Lourdes.

The original church was painted white inside and out, and people called it the White Chapel. The walls were finished with a traditional plaster mix of lime and egg, which gave them a smooth, polished surface. The colours have changed over the years, and today the façade is a soft pink and cream.

Among its treasures is an oil painting of Our Lady of the Assumption, believed to have been a gift from Napoleon III. The statue of Joan of Arc in the garden was donated in 1919 by the then mayor, François Gaudart.

What to see

  • The façade and towers: columns, a triangular pediment and Latin inscriptions, framed by two towers. Stand in the garden opposite for the best view.
  • Joan of Arc statue: in the small garden in front of the church.
  • The interior: a bright, calm nave with stained-glass windows, the Assumption painting and an organ.
  • Services: if you can, attend part of a French mass, a rare experience in India.
  • Feast: the church’s annual feast falls on the second Sunday of August.

Timings and entry

Entry is free. At the time of writing, the church is usually open to visitors roughly from 9 AM to 12 noon and from 2 PM to 6 PM on weekdays, with services in the early morning and evening and on Sundays. The doors may be closed at midday. Check the board at the entrance for current mass times in each language.

Best time to visit

Morning is good for photographs of the façade, which faces the sea. Many visitors come in the late afternoon and then walk a block east to Promenade Beach as the road closes to traffic. Twenty to thirty minutes is enough, unless you stay for a service.

Practical tips

  • Dress: modest clothing is expected inside, with shoulders and knees covered.
  • Photography: the exterior is a favourite backdrop for photos, including pre-wedding shoots. Inside, keep it discreet, without flash, and never during mass.
  • Silence: keep phones on silent and voices low.
  • Parking: Rue Dumas is narrow. It is easiest to be dropped at the seafront or a nearby corner and walk.
  • Footwear: comfortable sandals are fine; the area is best seen on foot.

Nearby places

The church sits in the middle of White Town. The French War Memorial and Old Lighthouse are a two-minute walk away on the seafront, and Bharathi Park is a few blocks north. For a fuller church trail, add the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
