Chikkamagaluru – still widely called Chikmagalur – is a district town in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, set at about 1,090 metres among coffee estates and forested hills. It is where the story of coffee in India begins, and it has the state’s highest peak just north of town.
It is far from Pondicherry, about 570 km, so it suits travellers with a week to spare. The reward is a cool, green landscape very different from the Tamil Nadu plains, with easy links to the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu and to Coorg, the other great coffee district of Karnataka.

The coffee story
According to the Coffee Board of India, Indian coffee begins with a Sufi saint, Baba Budan, who is said to have brought seven coffee seeds from the port of Mocha in Yemen around 1600 and planted them near his hermitage in the hills that now carry his name. For a long time coffee remained a garden plant; commercial estates only spread across the region from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Today the district is covered with shade-grown coffee – arabica on the higher slopes, robusta lower down – often planted with pepper vines climbing the shade trees. Many estates offer homestays, and some offer walks through the plantation where you can see picking (usually in the cooler months after the monsoon) and processing. Buying freshly roasted coffee to take home is part of the trip.
Top things to see in Chikkamagaluru
Mullayanagiri
At about 1,930 metres, Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka. A road climbs most of the way, and the last stretch is a flight of a few hundred steps to a small shrine at the top, dedicated to a sage who is believed to have meditated in the caves just below the summit. On a clear morning the view over the Western Ghats is superb; in the monsoon you may be inside the cloud. Keen walkers can take the older Sarpadari trail instead of the road.
Baba Budangiri
Further along the same range is Baba Budangiri, a hill with a shrine revered by both Hindus and Muslims, associated with Baba Budan and with Dattatreya. Nearby is Manikyadhara Falls, a small cascade that pilgrims visit. The site can be very crowded around Datta Jayanti in December.
Kemmangundi and Hebbe Falls
Kemmangundi, about 53 km from town, was the summer retreat of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and is now run by the state horticulture department, with gardens and viewpoints such as Z Point. Hebbe Falls, about 10 km further, drops around 168 metres in two stages; it lies inside a coffee estate and is usually reached by jeep and a short walk. Access depends on the season and local rules, so check before you go.
Belur and Halebidu
Belur, about 25 km from Chikkamagaluru, has the Chennakeshava Temple, built in the early 12th century and covered with carvings of dancers, musicians and deities. Halebidu, about 16 km from Belur, has the Hoysaleswara Temple. Both are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas’, listed in 2023, and they fit easily into the drive in or out.

Vehicle passes for Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri
To control traffic on the narrow hill road, the Chikkamagaluru district administration now requires an online vehicle pass for Mullayanagiri and the Inam Dattatreya Peeta (Baba Budangiri), with a daily limit and fixed time slots. Book through the district’s official portal before you go; rules on vehicle size and slot times can change. Treks inside national parks and reserve forests, such as Kudremukh, need a separate permit from the Karnataka Forest Department’s Aranya Vihaara booking site.
How to reach from Pondicherry
The usual route is Pondicherry – Tiruvannamalai – Krishnagiri – Bengaluru on the first day, then Bengaluru – Hassan – Belur – Chikkamagaluru on the second. The second day is around 240 km and leaves time for Belur. Tamil Nadu tourist cars pay an interstate permit charge on entering Karnataka.

Best time to visit
October to March is the most reliable period, with clear views from the peaks and cool nights; winter temperatures in town fall to around 11–20 °C. April and May are warmer but still pleasant in the hills. The southwest monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain, leeches on forest paths and frequent mist, but the waterfalls are at their best and the estates are intensely green.
