One day in Pondicherry is enough to see the main sights; two days let you understand the place. This tour gives the French Quarter a full, relaxed day, and then uses the second day for the side of Pondicherry most visitors skip: the backwater beach at Paradise, the wetland at Ousteri, the ancient trading site at Arikamedu and a working Chola-era temple at Villianur.

Why this route works
Everything on day 1 is within walking distance of the seafront, so the car is used only to cut out the hot stretches. Keeping the churches and the museum together also avoids repeated drives through the narrow one-way streets of the old town.
Day 2 is arranged as a loop. Chunnambar and Arikamedu both lie south of town, near the Ariyankuppam river, and Ousteri and Villianur lie to the west, close to each other. The Paradise Beach boat goes first because ferries to the sandbar stop in the afternoon (at the time of writing, roughly 4 pm – check at the boat house), and the lake comes later in the day, when birds become active again.
Best season
November to March is ideal. Winter is also when migratory birds gather at Ousteri, so it is the best time for the lake. From April to June the heat is strong by 10 am; we then start at 7 am and keep a long lunch break. Heavy rain in October–December can stop the boats to Paradise Beach for a day or two, and we plan an alternative if that happens.

Where to stay for this tour
Staying in or near White Town makes day 1 easier, because you can walk out early before the heat and return to rest at midday. The French Quarter has restored heritage guesthouses and small boutique hotels; the Tamil Quarter across the canal and the area around the bus stand have more standard and budget options. Beach resorts on the East Coast Road are quieter but add a 15–30 minute drive each way. Tell us your budget and we will suggest a few choices in each category.
Temple and church etiquette
Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees for the temples and churches. Footwear is left outside the Manakula Vinayagar and Villianur temples. Mass is held at the churches at set times, so visitors are asked to stay at the back or wait until the service ends. Carry sunscreen, a cap and a small towel for the beach.
