Along with the sea, Pondicherry has estuaries, a large freshwater lake and, a short drive south, one of India's best-known mangrove forests. Water trips here are gentle rather than adventurous: short boat rides, slow paddles through mangroves and quiet hours watching birds. They suit families, older travellers and anyone who wants a break from temple and town sightseeing.
Around Pondicherry
Chunnambar Boat House, south of town, runs boats along the backwater to Paradise Beach, where the river meets the sea. It is the easiest backwater experience from Pondicherry and works well with children.
Ousteri Lake (Oussudu), on the western edge of Puducherry territory, is a large wetland known for birdlife. Migratory species arrive from around October and stay until March. Boating depends on water levels and generally runs after the monsoon, when the lake is full.
Pichavaram mangroves
About 75 km south, near Chidambaram, the Pichavaram mangrove forest is a maze of narrow channels best explored by rowing boat. It is an easy add-on to a Chidambaram temple visit, and the combination makes a relaxed day trip from Pondicherry. Boats operate in daylight hours only – check timings before you set out.
Hill-station lakes
- Yercaud – a lake in the middle of town with rowing and pedal boats.
- Yelagiri – Punganoor Lake, with a park and boating.
- Kodaikanal – a star-shaped lake with a walking and cycling path around it.
- Ooty – Ooty Lake, a popular boating spot close to the town centre.
Kerala backwaters
For a full backwater experience, Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the gateway to the canals and lakes of Kuttanad, where you can stay overnight on a converted rice-barge houseboat. Best time and tips
November to February is the best general season: lakes are full after the northeast monsoon, the air is cooler and birds are present. Kerala's backwaters are pleasant from September to March; the southwest monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain.
- Go early morning or late afternoon for light, birds and cooler air.
- Wear life jackets where provided and keep children seated in boats.
- Carry insect repellent for mangroves and lakes in the evening.
- Boat timings and fares change with the season – confirm on the day.
