A weekend gives you two days, so the rule of thumb is simple: stay within about four to five hours of Pondicherry, or roughly 250 km. That still covers a surprising range – a sacred hill, Pallava rock carvings, a Danish fort on the sea, Chola temples, a bird sanctuary and two small hill stations. Everything below works as a two-day trip with a car and driver, leaving Pondicherry early on the first morning.
Under two hours away
- Tiruvannamalai (about 108 km) and Gingee (about 67 km) – the Arunachaleswarar Temple, Ramana's ashram and the Gingee Fort climb. Also possible as a day trip.
- Mahabalipuram (about 96 km) – the Shore Temple and Pancha Rathas, with Vedanthangal bird sanctuary (about 100 km from Pondicherry) in the winter season. See the Vedanthangal and Mahabalipuram trip.
- Chidambaram (about 64 km) – the Nataraja temple and a boat ride through the Pichavaram mangroves.
Two to four hours away
- Tranquebar (about 120 km) and Karaikal – the Danish-era Fort Dansborg, a quiet beach and colonial streets. Our coastal trip adds Velankanni.
- Vellore (about 160 km) – the moated Vellore Fort and the Sripuram Golden Temple. See the Vellore Golden Temple trip.
- Kumbakonam (about 131 km) and Thanjavur (about 168 km) – Chola temples, bronze workshops and filter coffee.
- Chennai (about 150 km) – museums, Mylapore and the Marina, for a city break.
Hills within a weekend
Yercaud (about 237 km) and Yelagiri (about 241 km) are the nearest hill stations, five to six hours away. They work best with a long weekend or an early Saturday start. See the Yercaud Hill Getaway, or pair Yelagiri with the waterfalls at Hogenakkal on the Hogenakkal and Yelagiri weekend. Kolli Hills is a quieter option for those who don't mind hairpin bends – see the Kolli Hills getaway. More options are on our hill stations page.
Best season
November to February is the best time for most of these trips, with cooler weather for temple visits and fort climbs. Vedanthangal's birds are present mainly in the winter months. The coast is hot from April to June, when the hills make more sense. During the northeast monsoon, roughly October to December, check the weather before heading along the coast.
Tips for a good weekend
- Leave by 6–7 am on day one; you gain the cool morning hours and avoid arriving in the dark.
- Temples are busiest on weekends, full-moon days and festivals – expect queues.
- Book hotels early for long weekends, especially in Yercaud, Yelagiri and Mahabalipuram.
- Choose one area per weekend rather than trying to combine far-apart places.
- Send us your dates on WhatsApp (+91 96265 65138) and we will suggest a route with car and driver, and help with a hotel.
