Pondicherry is flat, coastal and warm for most of the year, so a few cool days in the hills make a good contrast. There is no hill station right next door: the nearest ones are a five to six-hour drive away, and the best-known ones need a full day on the road. The trick is to match the hill station to the time you have: a long weekend covers Yercaud or Yelagiri comfortably, while Kodaikanal, Ooty or Munnar deserve four days or more, ideally with a stop on the way.
Closest hill stations: a weekend from Pondicherry
Yercaud (about 237 km) in the Shevaroy Hills above Salem is the usual first choice. It has a lake with boating, viewpoints over the plains and coffee estates, and Kiliyur Falls nearby after the rains. Yelagiri (about 241 km) is a smaller, quieter plateau reached by a road of hairpin bends, with Punganoor Lake and easy walks. The hills are at their best from October to May. March to May is the busiest period, when the plains are hottest and the hills offer relief, so hotels fill up and prices rise. December and January are cool to cold at night in Kodaikanal and Ooty – pack a warm layer. During the monsoon months, waterfalls are full but mist, rain and occasional landslides can slow the ghat roads.
Planning tips
- Leave Pondicherry early. Ghat roads are slow, and it is safer to finish the climb in daylight.
- Motion sickness is common on hairpin roads – carry tablets and ask your driver for stops.
- Avoid arriving on long weekends without a hotel booking; both Yercaud and Yelagiri are popular with Chennai and Bengaluru crowds.
- Combine a hill station with a temple or heritage stop on the way to break the drive.
