This five-day loop crosses three states. It starts in the Nilgiri hills at Ooty, drops into the green uplands of Wayanad in Kerala, and ends at the palace city of Mysore in Karnataka. Along the way are a ride on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the rock engravings of Edakkal and a daylight drive through two tiger reserves.
You travel in a private car with the same driver throughout. The first and last days are long drives, so the three middle days are kept short.
Who this tour suits
Families, couples and friends who want cool weather, forests and a bit of history in one trip, and who don’t mind two full days on the road. The Edakkal climb is steep and uneven in places; travellers with knee or heart problems can skip it and spend the morning at a plantation or lake instead.

Why this order
Starting with Ooty means the long first day ends in the cool of the hills, and it makes the toy train easy to fit in. The road from the Nilgiris to Wayanad via Gudalur is short and scenic, and from Wayanad the most direct way to Mysore is the national highway through the Muthanga and Bandipur forests. At the time of writing that road is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am to protect wildlife, which is why we drive it in the middle of the day. Finishing in Mysore puts you three hours from Bengaluru if you would rather fly or take a train home.
Edakkal Caves
Edakkal is not a true cave but a large cleft between boulders high on Ambukuthi Mala. Its walls carry engraved human and animal figures and symbols, which historians consider very old; some are thought to date back thousands of years. At the time of writing the site is closed on Mondays, and queues build up on weekends and holidays, so arriving at opening time helps. Wear shoes with a good grip and carry water.
Nilgiris e-pass and the toy train
Tourist vehicles from outside the Nilgiris need a Tamil Nadu e-pass to enter the district, and daily limits apply in peak months; we apply for it for your car and check the latest rules before the trip. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, part of UNESCO’s Mountain Railways of India site, runs a few services a day between Ooty and Coonoor. Book as soon as your dates are fixed; if seats are not available, the car follows the same route by road.
Best season
October to May is the main season. April and May are the peak months in Ooty, with crowds and higher hotel rates. Wayanad and the Nilgiris get heavy rain in the southwest monsoon (June to September), and landslips can close ghat roads for short periods. Mysore is at its busiest during Dasara (September–October), when the palace is lit up every evening.

What to pack
A sweater or fleece for Ooty in any season, and a heavier jacket from November to February, when nights can be close to freezing. A rain jacket is useful from June to September. Wear shoes with a good grip for the Edakkal climb, and carry motion-sickness tablets if winding ghat roads bother you. On the forest road through Bandipur, keep the windows up and never stop to feed or approach animals.
