Ooty – officially Udhagamandalam – is the main town of the Nilgiris district, at about 2,240 metres. The British developed it in the 19th century as the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency, and its gardens, churches, stone cottages and the railway climbing up from the plains all date from that period. Around the town, rolling tea estates, eucalyptus and shola forest cover the hills.
At roughly 430 km from Pondicherry, Ooty is a serious drive. It is best treated as part of a longer trip: Ooty and nearby Coonoor are often combined with Mysore, which lies just across the forest on the Karnataka side.

Why visit Ooty
Ooty is the classic South Indian hill station, and it still delivers the basics well: cool weather, well-kept gardens, forest drives and viewpoints. For families there is plenty to do without long walks, and the toy train is a highlight for children and adults alike. For couples, the quieter surroundings of Coonoor or the estates outside town make a better base than the busy centre.
It is also the gateway to the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The road down to Mysore passes through Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, where elephants, deer and gaur are often seen from the car.
Top things to see in and around Ooty
Nilgiri Mountain Railway
This metre-gauge line runs from Mettupalayam up to Coonoor and on to Ooty. The Mettupalayam–Coonoor section, opened in 1899, uses a rack-and-pinion system to handle the steep climb and is the only rack railway in India. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2005 as part of the Mountain Railways of India. Seats are limited and sell out quickly, so book early through Indian Railways. Many visitors ride only the Coonoor–Ooty stretch, which is easier to fit into a day.
Government Botanical Garden
Laid out in the 1840s on the slopes of Doddabetta, the garden has lawns, glasshouses, a fossilised tree trunk and large old trees. The annual flower show held here every May is the centrepiece of the Nilgiris summer festival and draws huge crowds.
Doddabetta Peak
About 10 km from town, Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiris at roughly 2,620 metres. A road runs almost to the top, where there is a telescope house. Go early; by late morning cloud often covers the view.
Ooty Lake and Rose Garden
The lake was created in 1824 and has a boat house run by Tamil Nadu tourism. The Government Rose Garden, on terraced slopes near the town centre, holds thousands of rose varieties and is at its best from April to June.
Coonoor
Coonoor, about 19 km down the ghat road, is smaller and calmer than Ooty. Sim’s Park, a hillside botanical garden, hosts a fruit show in May. Viewpoints such as Dolphin’s Nose and Lamb’s Rock look over tea estates and valleys, and several tea factories allow visitors to see processing and buy fresh tea.

A realistic plan from Pondicherry
Driving to Ooty in one go is possible but tiring. We usually suggest one of these:
- Ooty and Coonoor (4–5 days): Day 1 Pondicherry to Coimbatore or Mettupalayam (overnight). Day 2 up to Coonoor and Ooty by road or toy train. Days 3–4 sightseeing. Day 5 long drive back via Salem.
- Ooty, Coonoor and Mysore (6–7 days): after Ooty, descend through Mudumalai to Mysore, then return to Pondicherry via Krishnagiri or Bengaluru. This is our Ooty, Coonoor and Mysore tour.
- Adding Coorg: from Mysore it is about three hours to Coorg, so a two-state hill loop is possible in 8–9 days.
- Closer alternative: if you have only two or three days, Yercaud or Kodaikanal involve less driving.
Best time to visit and weather
March to June is peak season, with pleasant days and the May flower show; it is also the most crowded time, with long queues and traffic. October to February is quieter and cooler, and from December to February nights can be close to freezing with frost in the valleys. The south-west monsoon from June to September brings steady rain, mist and occasional landslides on ghat roads, though the hills are at their greenest.
How to reach Ooty from Pondicherry
By road
The usual route is Pondicherry – Villupuram – Ulundurpet – Salem – Erode – Mettupalayam – Coonoor – Ooty. The final ghat section from Mettupalayam has many hairpin bends. An e-pass for vehicles entering the Nilgiris has been required since 2024 and the rules have been revised several times; check epass.tnega.org before you travel.
By train
The overnight Nilgiri Express runs from Chennai to Mettupalayam, timed to connect with the morning mountain train. From Pondicherry this means first getting to Chennai or joining at a station on the route, so most of our guests prefer to drive and take the toy train for a shorter stretch.
By air
Coimbatore is the nearest airport, about 96 km from Ooty.
Food and shopping
Ooty’s best buys are Nilgiri tea from estate shops and factories, home-made chocolates, eucalyptus oil and Ooty varkey, a crisp layered biscuit. Carrots, cabbages and other vegetables grown on the slopes are sold fresh. Restaurants range from simple South Indian places to bakeries and hotel dining rooms; hot tea and bajji at roadside stalls are part of the experience on a cold evening.

- Book toy train seats as early as possible; walk-in chances are slim in season.
- Carry warm clothes in every season – evenings are cold.
- Plastic bottles and bags are restricted in the Nilgiris; carry a reusable bottle.
- Start sightseeing early to beat traffic and cloud cover.
- The Mudumalai road has fixed opening hours and speed limits; your driver will plan around them.
