One of the best things about staying in Pondicherry is how much lies within a morning’s drive. You can be at a UNESCO World Heritage monument, a great Shiva temple, a hill fort or a mangrove forest and still be back in time for dinner by the sea.
This guide is about what genuinely fits into one day. For each trip we give the approximate road distance and drive time from Pondicherry, a realistic plan, and when an overnight stay is the better idea – in which case our weekend getaways from Pondicherry guide takes over. How to plan a day trip from Pondicherry
- Leave early. A 6.30–7 am start beats both the heat and the traffic, and most temples are at their calmest in the morning.
- Mind the midday break. Many Tamil Nadu temples close for a few hours from around noon to 4 pm. Plan monuments, lunch or boat rides for that window.
- Keep it to about three hours’ driving each way at most. Beyond that, a day trip becomes mostly time in the car.
- Carry water, a hat and temple-friendly clothing – shoulders and knees covered, and footwear that is easy to slip off.
1. Chidambaram and Pichavaram (about 64 km)
Drive: about 1.5 hours to Chidambaram; Pichavaram is roughly 16 km further.
The easiest big day out from Pondicherry. Start at the Thillai Nataraja Temple, the great temple of Shiva as the cosmic dancer, in the morning. After lunch, drive to the Pichavaram mangrove forest, where the Tamil Nadu Tourism boat house offers rowing and motor boats through the channels. Rowing boats can slip into the narrow tunnels of mangroves that motorboats cannot reach. At the time of writing, boating runs roughly from 9 am to 5 pm – check before you go.
Fits in a day? Comfortably. Back in Pondicherry by early evening.
2. Gingee Fort (about 67 km)
Drive: about 1.5 hours.
Gingee Fort spreads across three rocky hills linked by walls, and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The climb to the citadel on Rajagiri is long and steep – allow two to three hours up and down – and entry to the climb closes by mid-afternoon, so arrive early. Krishnagiri, the smaller hill opposite, is a shorter climb for later in the day. Carry plenty of water; there is little shade.
Fits in a day? Yes, easily, and it pairs well with Tiruvannamalai. More on Gingee.
3. Tiruvannamalai (about 108 km)
Drive: about 2.5 hours, or around 40 km beyond Gingee.
Tiruvannamalai is built around the vast Arunachaleswarar Temple at the foot of Arunachala hill. A day trip allows the temple and a visit to the Ramana Maharshi ashram; the 14 km walk around the hill (girivalam) is best done in the cool of the early morning or evening, which makes a full-moon walk more of an overnight plan.

4. Mahabalipuram (about 96 km)
Drive: about 2 hours up the East Coast Road.
Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) is the Pallava port whose monuments form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In a day you can see the Shore Temple, the Pancha Rathas, the great open-air relief known as Arjuna’s Penance, the cave temples on the hill and the lighthouse viewpoint. The monuments are spread out, so the car helps. Stone carving workshops line the streets if you want to watch sculptors at work.
Fits in a day? Yes. Visit the Shore Temple first or last to avoid the harshest sun.
5. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary (about 90–100 km)
Drive: around 2 hours via Tindivanam and Madurantakam.
Vedanthangal is one of the oldest water-bird sanctuaries in India, a tank whose trees fill with nesting birds – painted storks, open-billed storks, spoonbills, ibises, cormorants and herons among them – in the season from about November to March. Birds are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. At the time of writing, the sanctuary is open from 6 am to 6 pm; check before you go, and remember there is little to see outside the season.

6. Tranquebar (Tharangambadi) (about 115–120 km)
Drive: about 2.5–3 hours down the coast via Chidambaram.
Tranquebar was a Danish trading settlement from 1620, and the seafront Fort Dansborg now houses a small museum. The quiet town has colonial streets, old churches and a long beach. At the time of writing, the fort museum is closed on Fridays – check before you go.
Fits in a day? Yes, but it is a full one. Stop at Chidambaram on the way down and skip Pichavaram, or stay overnight and continue to Karaikal and Velankanni – see our Tranquebar, Karaikal and Velankanni coast tour.
7. Kanchipuram (about 118 km)
Drive: about 2.5–3 hours.
Kanchipuram is a city of temples and silk. In one day you can see the Pallava-era Kailasanathar Temple, the Ekambareswarar and Varadharaja Perumal temples, and a silk weaving house. Temples close in the early afternoon, so shop for silk then.
Fits in a day? Yes, though Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram together make a very long day. They are better as a two-day trip – see our Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram heritage tour.
8. Kumbakonam and Darasuram (about 130 km)
Drive: about 3 hours each way.
Kumbakonam is the most distant of these day trips. It is worth it for the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, a few kilometres outside town, which is one of the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples and has some of the finest carving in Tamil Nadu. Add one or two of Kumbakonam’s temples and the Mahamaham tank.
Fits in a day? Only just. With six hours of driving, we usually recommend an overnight stay and adding Thanjavur, or joining our Great Chola Temples or Navagraha Temple tours.
Closer to town: half-day ideas
If you’d rather not travel far, Pondicherry has plenty for a half day: boat rides at the Chunnambar boat house to Paradise Beach, birdlife at Ousteri Lake, the Chola-era Villianur temple and the old trading site of Arikamedu. - First visit, one day to spare: Mahabalipuram for monuments, or Chidambaram and Pichavaram for a temple and a boat ride.

Can I visit Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram in one day from Pondicherry?
It is possible but tiring, with around six hours of driving and rushed sightseeing. Most people enjoy them far more over two days with a night in Mahabalipuram.
Can I combine Chidambaram and Pichavaram in one day?
Yes. Chidambaram is about 64 km from Pondicherry and Pichavaram is roughly 16 km beyond it, so a temple visit in the morning and a boat ride in the afternoon fit comfortably.
When is the best time to visit Vedanthangal?
From about November to March, when migratory and nesting water birds are present. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for the most activity.
Is Kumbakonam possible as a day trip from Pondicherry?
It is about 130 km each way, so around six hours of driving in total. It can be done, but an overnight stay lets you add Thanjavur and see the temples without rushing.
