If White Town shows you French Pondicherry, Goubert Market shows you the Tamil town at work. This is the city’s main bazaar, originally known as the Grand Bazaar, a warren of covered lanes where hundreds of stalls sell fish, vegetables, fruit, flowers, spices and household goods. It sits in the heart of the old Tamil quarter, in the block framed by Jawaharlal Nehru Street, Ranga Pillai Street, Mahatma Gandhi Road and Bharathi Street.
On Sundays a second, very different market takes over Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road nearby: the Sunday Market, a long street market of clothes, books, gadgets and everything in between. Together they are the best places in Pondicherry for local colour and everyday shopping.

A little history
The market dates from the French period; it is commonly said to have been founded in 1826 as the Grand Bazaar of the native town. It now carries the name of Édouard Goubert, the Pondicherry politician who backed the merger with India in 1954 and became the territory’s first Chief Minister in 1963. Directly opposite stands the 18th-century Ananda Ranga Pillai Mansion, a reminder that this has been a merchants’ quarter for nearly 300 years.
What to see and buy at Goubert Market
- Flowers: heaps of jasmine, marigold and roses, strung into garlands and hair strings. This is the most photogenic section, especially early in the morning.
- Fish: the morning catch from the coast, sold loudly and quickly. Go early if you want to see it at its busiest.
- Fruit and vegetables: bananas of many kinds, mangoes in season, greens and local produce.
- Spices and provisions: dried chillies, masalas, rice and pulses, useful if you want to take home Tamil kitchen staples.
- Household goods: kitchen vessels and small everyday items.
The Sunday Market on MG Road
Every Sunday, stalls line both sides of Mahatma Gandhi Road for close to a kilometre. At the time of writing it runs from about mid-morning until late evening. You will find clothes, footwear, bags, costume jewellery, toys, kitchenware, electronics accessories and a large number of new and second-hand books. Prices are low and bargaining is expected.
The market draws big crowds, and the road is effectively given over to shoppers, so it is best explored on foot. Mornings are easier for browsing; evenings are busier and livelier.
Best time to visit
For Goubert Market, go early, roughly between 6 and 9 AM, when the flowers and fish are fresh and the lanes are at their most animated. By midday it is hot and quieter. For the Sunday Market, a Sunday morning visit gives you more space to browse, while the evening has more atmosphere. Allow an hour to an hour and a half for either.
Practical tips
- Footwear: closed shoes or sturdy sandals. Floors in the fish and vegetable sections are wet and slippery.
- Photography: ask vendors before photographing them; most are happy to agree if you are polite, and buying something small helps.
- Bargaining: normal at the Sunday Market and for non-food items; less so for fresh produce.
- Cash: carry small notes, although UPI is widely used.
- Valuables: crowds are dense, so keep phones and wallets secure.
- Parking: very limited around the market and almost impossible on Sunday on MG Road. Our drivers drop you at a nearby corner and pick you up at an agreed time.

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Mission Street is a short walk away. Walk east across the canal to reach White Town, the Manakula Vinayagar Temple, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Bharathi Park, all within about 15 minutes on foot.
