The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the most striking church in Pondicherry, a tall Gothic Revival building with a brick-red and white façade that stands on the South Boulevard (Subbiah Salai), close to the Pondicherry railway station. Inside, the light filters through a series of old stained-glass panels, the church’s real treasure.
It is a working parish church and a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from across Tamil Nadu, but visitors of any faith are welcome to step in, sit quietly and look around.

History of the basilica
The church was built by French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP). Work began in 1902, and the church was consecrated on 17 December 1907. The architect was Rev. Fr. Telesphore Welter.
It is built of brick on a Latin cross plan, about 50 metres long and 48 metres wide, with 24 main columns supporting the roof. In 2011 Pope Benedict XVI raised it to the rank of a minor basilica; the elevation was formally announced on 2 September 2011.
What to see
- The façade: twin towers, pointed arches, statues of saints in niches and a round rose window in the Gothic Revival style, painted in bold red and white. It is best photographed from across the boulevard.
- Stained glass: rare panels depicting scenes from the life of Christ and saints of the Catholic Church, including a series of 28 saints connected with the devotion to the Sacred Heart.
- The interior: a long, high nave with an ornate altar. It is cool inside and a pleasant break from the midday heat.
- Feast days: special night masses are held at Christmas, Easter and on New Year’s Eve, when the church is packed.
Timings and entry
Entry is free. The church is generally open from early morning until evening. At the time of writing, weekday masses are held at about 6 AM, 12 noon and 6 PM, with more services on Sundays. Mass timings change on feast days, so check at the parish office or on the notice board. Visitors are welcome during mass but should sit quietly at the back and avoid walking around.
Best time to visit and how long to spend
Late afternoon is ideal: the sun is in the west, the façade glows and the interior light through the stained glass is at its best. Thirty to forty-five minutes is enough for most visitors. Sundays are the busiest, with back-to-back services.
Practical tips
- Dress: modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is expected inside.
- Footwear: shoes can usually be worn inside, unlike in temples; follow any signs at the door.
- Photography: exterior photography is fine. Inside, avoid flash and don’t photograph people praying or services in progress.
- Parking: the South Boulevard is a main road with some roadside parking. Our drivers drop guests at the gate.
- Getting there: it is a 10–15 minute walk from the southern end of Promenade Beach, or a short drive from anywhere in town.
Nearby places
The Botanical Garden is a few minutes away along the same boulevard, and the railway station is next door. Pondicherry has several other historic churches: the Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Mission Street and Our Lady of Angels Church in White Town can be visited in the same afternoon.
