There is no single best month for South India, because the region has two monsoons that arrive from opposite directions at different times of year. When it is pouring in Kerala, Pondicherry can be dry and hot; when Kerala clears in October, the Tamil Nadu coast is just getting its main rains. The hills, meanwhile, run on their own calendar.

The two monsoons, explained
South-west monsoon: June to September
The south-west monsoon is India’s main rainy season. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it normally sets in over Kerala around 1 June and then spreads north across the country. It brings very heavy rain to the western side of the peninsula – Kerala, Coorg, Chikmagalur, Wayanad and the Nilgiris’ western slopes – because moist winds from the Arabian Sea hit the Western Ghats.
Most of Tamil Nadu, including Pondicherry, lies in the rain shadow of the Ghats and gets relatively little rain in these months. June to September on the east coast is usually hot and humid with occasional thunderstorms.
North-east monsoon: October to December
As the south-west monsoon withdraws, winds reverse. The north-east monsoon season, October to December, is the chief rainy season for Tamil Nadu: IMD figures show the state receives about 48% of its annual rainfall in these three months, and the normal onset over coastal Tamil Nadu is around 20 October. Rain tends to come in heavy spells, and the Bay of Bengal also produces cyclones and depressions in this period, which can cause flooding along the coast from Chennai to Nagapattinam.
Kerala and the southern hills also get showers in October and November, but usually less intense than in the south-west monsoon.
The short answer
- Tamil Nadu plains and Pondicherry: December to February is best; November can be wet; March onwards is hot.
- Kerala backwaters and coast: September to March, with December and January the most comfortable.
- Kerala and Tamil Nadu hills (Munnar, Thekkady, Kodaikanal, Ooty): October to May, with April–May the busy summer escape.
- Karnataka coffee hills (Coorg, Chikmagalur) and Wayanad: October to March, with blossom season around March–April.
- Whole-region sweet spot: mid-December to February, when both coasts are generally dry and the hills are cool.
Month by month
January
Probably the best all-round month. Pondicherry and the temple towns of Thanjavur and Madurai are dry and warm rather than hot. Kerala’s backwaters are at their most pleasant, and hill nights are cold – in Munnar and Ooty temperatures can drop close to freezing on clear nights. Pongal, the Tamil harvest festival, falls in mid-January.
February
Still excellent in the plains and on both coasts, and slightly warmer. Note that Eravikulam National Park near Munnar closes every year in February and March for the calving season of the Nilgiri tahr, according to Kerala Tourism.
March
The plains start heating up, so plan temple visits for early morning and late afternoon. Kerala is warm and humid but fine for the backwaters. In Coorg and Chikmagalur, the first showers can trigger coffee blossom in March or April. Eravikulam remains closed.
April
Hot on the plains and coast. This is when the hills come into their own: Kodaikanal, Ooty, Yercaud and Munnar fill with visitors escaping the heat, so book early. Madurai’s Chithirai festival usually falls in April or May.
May
The hottest month in much of Tamil Nadu; the hills are at peak season, with school holidays. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms arrive in Kerala late in the month. Ooty and Kodaikanal require an e-pass for visiting vehicles at the time of writing – check the Tamil Nadu government portal epass.tnega.org before you go.
June
The south-west monsoon reaches Kerala, typically around 1 June. Kerala, Coorg and Wayanad turn intensely green, waterfalls fill up, and houseboat rates usually fall. Expect heavy rain, landslide risk on ghat roads and fewer outdoor activities. Pondicherry and the Tamil Nadu plains are hot and mostly dry.
July
Peak monsoon in Kerala and the Karnataka hills. Good for monsoon lovers and Ayurveda treatments – see our Ayurveda and wellness page – but road trips need flexible plans. In Tamil Nadu, temple circuits are workable with early starts.
August
Rain eases a little in Kerala towards the end of the month. The Nehru Trophy snake boat race near Alleppey is traditionally held on the second Saturday of August, and Onam falls in August or September. The Velankanni feast begins on 29 August.
September
The south-west monsoon weakens. Kerala’s backwater season begins, with high water and green paddy fields around Alleppey. Mysore Dasara, the city’s great festival with the palace illuminated, falls in September or October depending on the lunar calendar.
October
A transition month. Kerala and the hills are fresh and green after the rains and generally good to visit. On the Tamil Nadu coast, the north-east monsoon usually begins around the third week, so Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram may see heavy showers late in the month.
November
The wettest month on much of the Tamil Nadu coast, with a risk of cyclones. Kerala, Coorg and Chikmagalur are pleasant. Karthigai Deepam in Tiruvannamalai falls in November or December.
December
Rain on the east coast usually eases through the month, though early December can still be wet. From mid-December, almost everywhere is good: cool hills, green plains and calm backwaters. Christmas and New Year are the busiest dates of the year for Pondicherry, Kerala houseboats and hill hotels, so book well ahead. Tips for travelling in each season
- Hot months (March–June): start sightseeing by 7 am, rest after lunch, and carry water, a hat and sunscreen. Temple floors get very hot by late morning.
- Monsoon months: build in a spare day, avoid ghat roads after dark and check forest-area closures, which change at short notice.
- Cyclone alerts: follow IMD warnings between October and December and be ready to change plans on the coast.
- Festivals: they add colour but fill hotels – decide whether you want to be there or avoid the dates.
