Pondicherry is a coastal town on the plains, and for much of the year it is warm and humid. The good news is that several hill stations are within a day’s drive. The less obvious news is that they are very different from one another: two are compact weekend escapes in the Eastern Ghats, while the other three are larger, cooler and much further away in the Western Ghats.
This comparison looks at five options – Yercaud, Yelagiri, Kodaikanal, Ooty and Munnar – with realistic road distances and drive times from Pondicherry, and who each one suits. Distances are approximate and vary by route; drive times assume a car with a driver and a couple of short stops.

Yercaud: the easy two-day escape
Yercaud, in the Shevaroy Hills above Salem, is the most practical hill station for a short trip from Pondicherry. The drive runs inland via Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Attur to Salem, then climbs a ghat road with 20 hairpin bends. At about 1,515 m, it is noticeably cooler than the plains without being cold.
The appeal is quiet rather than spectacular: coffee and pepper estates, the lake in the town centre, and viewpoints such as Lady’s Seat looking down over Salem. It suits couples, older travellers and anyone who wants a change of air without a long drive.

Yelagiri: small, quiet and green
Yelagiri is a cluster of hamlets on a small plateau in Tirupathur district, reached by a ghat road with 14 hairpin bends. The nearest railway station, Jolarpettai, is about 20 km away. It is the least developed of the five, which is exactly why some people like it.
Things to do are simple: boating on Punganoor Lake, the park beside it, a trek up Swamimalai hill, and the walk to Jalagamparai waterfalls, which is best after rain. Adventure activities such as paragliding are offered at times; check availability before you go, as they depend on season and operators.
Go for: 2 days, 1 night. Skip if: you want cool, misty weather – Yelagiri is pleasant but not cold, and it can be warm in April and May. More in our Yelagiri guide.
Kodaikanal: the classic lake town
Kodaikanal, in the Palani Hills of the Western Ghats, is a proper hill station: high (around 2,200 m), cool all year, and often wrapped in mist. The route from Pondicherry runs via Trichy and Dindigul before the final climb, making it a full day’s drive of 7–8 hours.
Kodaikanal Lake, an artificial lake created in 1863 with a shoreline of about 5 km, is the centre of town life – you can walk, cycle or boat around it. Coaker’s Walk, a path along the edge of the southern slopes, gives valley views on clear mornings. Pine forests, Pillar Rocks and Bryant Park fill another day. It suits couples, honeymooners and families who don’t mind a long drive for real cool weather.

Ooty: best for families and the mountain railway
Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is the best known of Tamil Nadu’s hill stations, at about 2,240 m in the Nilgiris. It is also the furthest of the Tamil Nadu options from Pondicherry, at roughly 430 km, so most people either break the journey or combine it with Mysore and Coonoor.
Its big draw is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, part of UNESCO’s Mountain Railways of India World Heritage site since 2005. The line from Mettupalayam to Coonoor opened in 1899 and was extended to Ooty in 1908. The Government Botanical Garden, laid out in 1842, and the tea estates around Coonoor are the other highlights. Ooty is busy in the April–May summer season.

Munnar: tea country, as part of a Kerala trip
Munnar is in Kerala, but it fits here because many Pondicherry visitors ask about it. At about 1,600 m, it is surrounded by rolling tea estates and sits next to Eravikulam National Park, home of the endangered Nilgiri tahr. The park closes each year for the calving season, usually February and March.

Which hill station should you choose?
- Only a weekend: Yercaud or Yelagiri. Both are 4.5–5 hours away; Yercaud has a little more to see.
- Want genuinely cold weather: Kodaikanal or Ooty.
- Travelling with children: Ooty for the toy train and gardens, or Yercaud for a short, easy trip.
- Honeymoon: Kodaikanal or Munnar for mist and scenery.
- Want to add wildlife and backwaters: Munnar, as part of a Kerala loop.
- Don’t enjoy long drives or hairpin bends: Yercaud or Yelagiri – mostly plains driving, with a single ghat climb at the end.
Combining a hill station with other sights
Hill stations pair naturally with places on the way. One road to Yelagiri runs inland past Tiruvannamalai, so a temple visit can be folded into the outward drive. Kodaikanal combines well with Madurai, roughly 120 km away by road. Ooty links easily with Mysore and Coorg in Karnataka, and Munnar leads on to Thekkady and the backwaters of Alleppey.

When to go
The hill stations are at their most popular in April and May, when the plains are hottest; expect higher hotel rates and traffic on the ghat roads, especially in Ooty and Kodaikanal. October to December is the north-east monsoon season in Tamil Nadu, which brings rain and occasional road disruptions to the Eastern Ghats and to Kodaikanal; Munnar and Ooty are wettest in the south-west monsoon, roughly June to September.
For clear views and fewer crowds, late December to March is generally a good window. Nights in Kodaikanal, Ooty and Munnar can be cold then, so pack a warm layer.

Which is the nearest hill station to Pondicherry?
Yelagiri and Yercaud are the closest, each roughly 220–240 km by road, or about 4.5–5 hours’ drive depending on the route.
Is Kodaikanal or Ooty better from Pondicherry?
Kodaikanal is a little closer (about 390–400 km) and quieter. Ooty is further (about 430 km) but has the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and combines well with Mysore. Both need 3–5 days to be worthwhile.
Do I need an e-pass to visit Ooty or Kodaikanal?
Under a Madras High Court order, private vehicles entering the Nilgiris district and Kodaikanal need an e-pass. The rules have been revised several times, so check the current position before travelling.
Can I do Yercaud as a day trip from Pondicherry?
