Coorg – officially Kodagu – is a hilly district in south-western Karnataka, on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. It is the heart of India’s coffee country: Kodagu alone produces around a third of India’s coffee. Its main town, Madikeri, sits on a ridge at about 1,100 metres, and the surrounding hills are covered with coffee and pepper estates shaded by tall forest trees.
The Kodavas, the region’s own community, have a distinct culture, dress and cuisine, and many estates are still family-run. Coorg is about 555 km from Pondicherry by road, which makes it the most distant of the hill regions we cover. The best way to reach it is via Mysore, which is a destination in its own right.

Why visit Coorg
Coorg is less about sightseeing and more about where you stay. Waking up in a plantation bungalow or homestay, walking through the estate, and drinking coffee grown a few metres away is the experience most visitors remember. The climate is mild, the countryside is green for most of the year, and the pace is slow.
There is also plenty to do: waterfalls, viewpoints, forest walks, river camps, a large Tibetan settlement, and the source of the Kaveri – the same river that flows past Trichy and Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu before its delta meets the Bay of Bengal south of Pondicherry.
Top things to see in Coorg
Madikeri
The district headquarters is a small, hilly town. Raja’s Seat, a garden on the edge of the ridge, was a favourite spot of the Kodagu kings for watching the sunset over the valleys, and it is still the place to be in the evening. Madikeri Fort houses government offices and a small museum, and the Omkareshwara Temple, built in 1820, combines Islamic-style domes with a Hindu shrine.
Abbey Falls
A short drive from Madikeri, Abbey Falls drops through coffee and spice estates. A path and steps lead down to a hanging bridge facing the falls. It is at its most powerful during and just after the monsoon; access may be restricted during very heavy rain.
Talakaveri and Bhagamandala
Talakaveri, about 45 km from Madikeri on the slopes of the Brahmagiri hills, is regarded as the source of the Kaveri river and is an important pilgrimage site, especially on Tula Sankramana in mid-October. On the way is Bhagamandala, where the Kaveri meets two other streams, with a temple in Kerala style.
Kushalnagar: Bylakuppe and Dubare
Near Kushalnagar, on the Mysore side of Coorg, the Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe is home to Namdroling Monastery, known as the Golden Temple for its large gilded Buddha statues. Dubare, on the banks of the Kaveri, is a Forest Department elephant camp where visitors can watch the elephants being bathed and fed in the morning. Nisargadhama, a small forested island in the river, is nearby. Check timings and programmes locally, as they vary with the season.

A realistic plan from Pondicherry
Coorg is too far to drive to in one day comfortably. We suggest:
- Mysore and Coorg (5–6 days): Day 1 Pondicherry to Mysore via Tiruvannamalai and Bengaluru. Day 2 Mysore sightseeing. Day 3 via Srirangapatna and Bylakuppe to Coorg. Day 4 Madikeri, Abbey Falls and Raja’s Seat. Day 5 Talakaveri or a relaxed estate day. Day 6 long drive back, or split with a night in Bengaluru or Krishnagiri.
- Coorg, Mysore and Ooty (8–9 days): combine with our Ooty, Coonoor and Mysore tour, adding two nights in Coorg after Mysore.
- Shorter hill break: if you only have two or three days, Yercaud or Yelagiri are much closer to Pondicherry.
Best time to visit and weather
October to March is the best time. The weather is cool and dry, and coffee blossoms or harvest activity can often be seen on the estates, depending on the month. Blossom, with its white flowers and strong scent, typically follows the first showers in March or April. April and May are warmer but still comfortable.
The south-west monsoon from June to September is very heavy in Coorg. Waterfalls are spectacular and the hills are intensely green, but roads can be affected by landslides, leeches are common on trails and outdoor plans often change.
How to reach Coorg from Pondicherry
By road
The route runs Pondicherry – Tiruvannamalai – Krishnagiri – Bengaluru – Mysore, then via Hunsur or Srirangapatna and Periyapatna to Kushalnagar and Madikeri. Coorg’s sights are spread out, so having a car with driver is by far the easiest way to get around.
By train and air
Coorg has no railway station. Mysuru Junction, around 120 km from Madikeri, is the nearest major station. Mangaluru, Kannur and Mysuru have the nearest airports; Bengaluru airport has far more flights but is around six hours away by road.
Food and shopping
Kodava cooking is one of the best reasons to stay in a homestay. Look for pandi curry (pork cooked with kachampuli, a dark vinegar made from a local fruit), kadambuttu (steamed rice balls), akki roti, noolputtu and bamboo-shoot curry. Vegetarian meals are easy to find too. Take home estate coffee, pepper, cardamom, honey and kachampuli; buy from estates or established shops in Madikeri.
