If the hill stations of Tamil Nadu feel too familiar, the coffee country of the Western Ghats is the next step. Coorg and Chikmagalur in Karnataka and Wayanad in Kerala are all green, hilly districts where coffee grows under tall shade trees, and where the best experience is often a quiet estate stay rather than a checklist of sights.

They are also far from Pondicherry – each is more than 500 km by road – so it helps to choose well. This guide compares the three on distance, character, sights, season and how they fit into a trip. For hill stations closer to home, see our weekend getaways from Pondicherry.

At a glance

  • Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka: about 555 km to Madikeri, 10–11 hours. Best for homestays, Kodava food and culture, and an easy mix of waterfalls, viewpoints and a Tibetan settlement.
  • Chikmagalur, Karnataka: about 560–575 km, 10–11 hours via Bengaluru and Hassan. Best for mountain scenery, Karnataka’s highest peak, coffee history and the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu nearby.
  • Wayanad, Kerala: roughly 510–580 km to Kalpetta depending on route, 10–12 hours. Best for forests and wildlife, ancient rock carvings, a large reservoir and a Kerala flavour.
  • All three are too far for a single comfortable day’s drive from Pondicherry. Break the journey at Bengaluru or Mysore.

Coorg: homestays and Kodava culture

Coorg is the best known of the three and the easiest to reach from Mysore, about 120 km away. Its main town, Madikeri, sits on a ridge at about 1,100 metres. Kodagu produces a large share of India’s coffee, and many estates are still family-run, which is why homestays are the heart of a Coorg holiday.

Typical sights include Abbey Falls, sunset at Raja’s Seat in Madikeri, Talakaveri (the source of the Kaveri) and the Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe on the way in from Mysore. The landscape is rolling rather than dramatic. Kodava cooking – pandi curry, kadambuttu, akki roti – is a real highlight.

Choose Coorg if: you want a relaxed, well-organised trip with plenty of accommodation choice, good food and easy day outings. It also works well with young children and older parents.

Chikmagalur: peaks and coffee history

Chikmagalur town sits at around 1,090 metres, below the Chandradrona range. This is where Indian coffee began: according to the Coffee Board of India, the saint Baba Budan planted seven coffee seeds from Mocha on the Baba Budan Giri hills around 1600. The shrine associated with him is still visited by pilgrims of different faiths.

The scenery is the most dramatic of the three. Mullayanagiri, at about 1,925 metres, is the highest peak in Karnataka and has a road almost to the top, followed by a short climb of steps. Nearby are Baba Budangiri, the Kemmangundi hill area and, further west, Kudremukh National Park. Because of heavy tourist traffic, the district administration introduced a daily cap and an online vehicle pass for the Mullayanagiri–Baba Budangiri area in 2025 – check the current rules on the district website before you go.

A big bonus is the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu, less than an hour’s drive away and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas’. Their carving is among the finest in India.

Choose Chikmagalur if: you enjoy viewpoints, short hikes and mountain drives, and want a heritage day as well. The narrow ghat roads and steep climbs make it less suited to anyone who suffers from motion sickness.

Wayanad: forests, caves and wildlife

Wayanad is a plateau district in north-east Kerala, lying roughly between 700 and 2,100 metres. Coffee here is mostly robusta, and it grows alongside pepper, tea and cardamom. Wayanad borders the forests of Bandipur and Nagarhole in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu, so wildlife is a bigger part of the experience than in the other two regions.

Highlights include the Edakkal Caves near Sulthan Bathery, whose walls carry Neolithic rock engravings; Banasura Sagar, described as the largest earth dam in India; Pookode Lake; Chembra Peak (about 2,100 metres), a popular trek when it is open; the Thirunelli temple in the forest; and jeep safaris in the Muthanga and Tholpetty ranges of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Forest safaris, treks and island visits are regularly suspended for fire season, monsoon or other reasons, so check with the Kerala Forest Department or Kerala Tourism close to your dates.

Parts of Meppadi panchayat, including Mundakkai and Chooralmala, were devastated by landslides on 30 July 2024. It is a reminder to take monsoon warnings seriously here and to check local advisories before travelling in the rains.

Choose Wayanad if: you like forests, wildlife and trekking, or want to combine the hills with Ooty or the Kerala coast.

Best season for coffee country

October to March is the most comfortable time in all three regions: dry, cool and good for walking. Coffee is harvested in the cooler months, and many estates are busy with picking and drying around December and January. Blossom follows the first showers, usually in March or April, when the estates are covered in white, scented flowers for a few days.

April and May are warmer but still pleasant and are busy with school holidays. The south-west monsoon, roughly June to September, is very heavy across the Western Ghats. Waterfalls are at their best, but landslides can close roads, leeches appear on trails and outdoor plans often change. For how this fits with the rest of the South, see our best time to visit South India guide.

Getting there from Pondicherry

For Coorg and Chikmagalur, the usual route is via Krishnagiri to Bengaluru, then west. Coorg continues through Mysore and Kushalnagar; Chikmagalur through Hassan. For Wayanad, the Mysore approach runs through Gundlupet and the Bandipur forest to Sulthan Bathery – about 130 km from Mysore to Kalpetta – and that forest stretch is closed to vehicles at night (roughly 9 pm to 6 am at the time of writing). A longer alternative via Hunsur and Mananthavady avoids Bandipur.

Between the regions, Madikeri to Chikmagalur is roughly 150–160 km and Madikeri to Kalpetta around 130 km, so any two combine well. Our South India road trip tips cover ghat roads, night driving and interstate permits.

Suggested combinations

  • Coffee trail (7–8 days): Pondicherry – Bengaluru – Chikmagalur (2 nights, with Belur and Halebidu) – Coorg (2 nights) – Mysore – return. See our Coorg and Chikmagalur coffee trail.
  • Hills and forests (7–8 days): Pondicherry – Mysore – Wayanad (2 nights) – Ooty (2 nights) – return via the plains. See our Wayanad, Ooty and Mysore tour.
  • Mysore and Coorg (5–6 days): the simplest option, following our Ooty, Coonoor and Mysore route with Coorg in place of Ooty, or added to it.
  • Add heritage: Hampi is a long but rewarding extension north of Chikmagalur – read Hampi from Pondicherry.

Tips for a coffee-country trip

  • Book estate stays and homestays early for December, New Year and long weekends.
  • Estates are private property; walk only where your hosts allow, and ask before photographing workers.
  • Buy coffee, pepper and spices from estates or established shops rather than roadside stalls with no labels.
  • Carry a light jacket, rain gear and comfortable walking shoes; weather in the Ghats changes quickly.
  • Mobile signal can be weak on remote estates – download maps offline.
  • For more plantation ideas, including the tea country of Munnar and Valparai, see our tea and coffee plantations page and our hill stations page.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Coorg or Chikmagalur?

Coorg is better for relaxed homestays, Kodava food and easy sightseeing. Chikmagalur has more dramatic mountain scenery, Karnataka’s highest peak and the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu nearby.

How far is Chikmagalur from Pondicherry?

Roughly 560–575 km by road via Bengaluru and Hassan, which is 10–11 hours of driving. It is best split with a night in Bengaluru.

Can I combine Coorg and Wayanad in one trip?

Yes. Madikeri to Kalpetta is around 130 km, so the two combine easily. Allow at least two nights in each, plus a stop in Mysore on the way from Pondicherry.

When is coffee blossom season in Coorg and Chikmagalur?

Coffee usually blossoms after the first pre-monsoon showers, typically in March or April. The flowers last only a few days, so exact timing depends on the rain.

Is Wayanad safe to visit during the monsoon?

Many visitors go in the monsoon, but heavy rain can cause landslides and road closures, and some activities are suspended. Check weather warnings and local advisories before travelling between June and September.
