Kodaikanal, in the Palani Hills of the Western Ghats, is the most popular hill station within a day’s drive of Pondicherry. At around 2,100 m it stays cool all year, and its star-shaped lake – created in 1863 under Sir Vere Henry Levinge, then Collector of Madurai – sits at the centre of a compact town ringed by viewpoints, forests and waterfalls.
The drive from Pondicherry is long, so this holiday gives you three nights in the hills and two full days of sightseeing, rather than spending half your trip on the road.
Who it suits
Families, honeymooners and groups of friends who want cool weather, easy walks, boating and scenery. It also works well as the hill-station part of a longer South India trip, combined with Madurai. Those who prefer quieter hills and a shorter drive may like our Yercaud hill getaway.
Route at a glance
- Pondicherry → Villupuram → Trichy → Dindigul → Batlagundu → Kodaikanal: about 398 km
- Day 2: Coaker’s Walk, Bryant Park, Kodai Lake, pine forest, Guna Caves, Pillar Rocks, Kurinji Andavar Temple
- Day 3: Berijam Lake (permit) or Vattakanal and Dolphin’s Nose
- Return via Batlagundu, or via Palani, or drop at Madurai airport
Why this plan
Most of the drive is on good four-lane highways, with only the last 50 km or so on the ghat road, so it is a long but straightforward day. We schedule the town sights on day 2, when the weather is usually clearest in the morning, and keep day 3 flexible because Berijam permits are limited and mist can roll in quickly.
Kodaikanal’s traffic can be heavy in the town centre during holidays. Having your own car and driver lets you reach viewpoints early, before the tourist buses arrive.
Best time to visit
April to June is peak season, when the plains are hottest and Kodaikanal is busy – book hotels well in advance, and expect traffic around the lake. Tourist vehicles entering Kodaikanal need a Tamil Nadu e-pass, with daily caps in peak months; we apply for it for your car and check the current rules before you travel. The summer festival and flower show at Bryant Park are usually held in May. September to November brings mist and rain but full waterfalls and green hills. December to February is cold at night, sometimes near freezing, with clear views in the daytime. The monsoon months can close some viewpoints temporarily.
How to customise
- Combine with Madurai’s Meenakshi Temple on the way up or back
- Add a night for a slower pace or a day trip to the Poombarai and Mannavanur side of the upper Palani Hills
- Five-day version returning via Palani for temple darshan
- Hotels, cottages and resorts in budget, standard or premium categories
- Pickup from Chennai or Bangalore, or drop at Madurai airport, on request
Where to stay in Kodaikanal
Hotels close to the lake and Coaker’s Walk let you walk to the main sights and restaurants, but can be noisy in peak season. Cottages and resorts on the outskirts, towards Vattakanal or the observatory road, are quieter and often have better views. We can suggest options in each category. Whichever you choose, ask whether rooms have heaters or extra blankets if you are travelling between November and February, as many older buildings are not heated.
What to pack
Warm layers are essential: a sweater or fleece for evenings in any season, and a proper jacket, cap and socks from November to February. Bring a rain jacket or umbrella, comfortable walking shoes with grip for Dolphin’s Nose, and motion-sickness tablets for the ghat road. Carry an ID card, as forest checkposts may ask for vehicle and visitor details.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Kodaikanal from Pondicherry?
Kodaikanal is about 398 km from Pondicherry by road via Trichy and Dindigul, a drive of roughly 7.5 to 8.5 hours with breaks.
Do we need a permit for Berijam Lake?
Yes. At the time of writing, Berijam Lake is inside a protected forest area and requires a permit from the Forest Department in Kodaikanal, with limited vehicles and daytime-only entry. Rules change, so we confirm on arrival.
Is Kodaikanal suitable for senior citizens?
Yes. Most viewpoints are close to the road, and the lake walk is level. Dolphin’s Nose and some forest trails are steep and can be skipped. The cold evenings in winter call for warm clothing.
Can this tour be customised?
Yes. Nights can be added, Madurai or Palani can be included and hotels can be chosen to your budget. Send your dates on WhatsApp.
Can you pick us up from Chennai or Bangalore?
Yes, pickup from Chennai or Bangalore can be arranged on request, and we can also end the trip with a drop at Madurai airport.
