Alleppey, officially Alappuzha, is a coastal town in Kerala that sits between the Arabian Sea and a vast network of lakes, rivers and canals known as the backwaters. The largest of these, Vembanad Lake, stretches north towards Kochi. Around it lies Kuttanad, a farming region where rice is grown on reclaimed land below sea level, protected by dykes.
Alleppey is the furthest of the Kerala destinations from Pondicherry, at about 609 km. It works best as the relaxing final stop of a Kerala circuit after Munnar and Thekkady.

Why visit Alleppey
A night on a houseboat is one of the most distinctive experiences in India. The boats are modelled on the kettuvallam, the traditional rice barges that once carried goods through these waters. Today they have bedrooms, a crew and a cook, and they drift slowly past villages, churches, toddy shops and paddy fields while life on the canals carries on around you – children going to school by boat, ducks herded along the banks, women washing clothes on the steps.
Alleppey is particularly popular with honeymooners and families, but anyone who wants a slow, restful day after the winding roads of the hills will enjoy it.
Things to do in Alleppey
Houseboat stay
Most houseboat stays are for one night. Boats typically board around midday, cruise through the afternoon with lunch served on board, and stop for the night at the bank by early evening because cruising after dark is not permitted. After breakfast the next morning there is a short cruise back and check-out by mid-morning. Boats range from simple one-bedroom vessels to large multi-room ones with air conditioning, which usually runs only at night.

Canal cruise by shikara or country boat
Large houseboats cannot enter the narrower canals. A few hours in a small motorised shikara or a hand-paddled country boat takes you into the village waterways of Kuttanad, which is often more interesting than the open lake. This is a good option if you prefer to stay in a hotel or homestay rather than on a boat.
Alappuzha town and beach
The town grew as a port and trading centre, and its old canals, warehouses and the ruined pier by the beach are reminders of that past. The lighthouse near the beach can be climbed for a view over the coast at the time of writing. Swimming at Alappuzha beach is risky because of strong currents; enjoy the sunset from the sand instead.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race
Held on Punnamada Lake, usually in August, this is the biggest of Kerala’s snake boat races, with long chundan vallams rowed by crews of more than 100 people. The race was named after Jawaharlal Nehru, who watched a race here in 1952. Tickets and dates are announced each year by the district administration.

A realistic plan from Pondicherry
Because of the distance, we do not recommend going to Alleppey and back on its own. Instead:
- Full Kerala circuit (7–8 days): Pondicherry – Madurai – Munnar (2 nights) – Thekkady (1–2 nights) – Alleppey houseboat (1 night) – return with an overnight stop in Madurai or Trichy. This is our Kerala tour of Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey.
- Southern coast loop: combine Kanyakumari and Alleppey via Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, returning through Madurai.
- The return drive: from Alleppey back to Pondicherry is more than 600 km. Split it with a night in Madurai, Theni or Dindigul rather than attempting it in one go.
Best time to visit and weather
September to March is the best time. The monsoon has passed, the water level is high and the paddy fields are green; December and January are the most pleasant but also the busiest and most expensive for houseboats. April and May are hot and humid. The south-west monsoon from June to August brings heavy rain, but houseboats still operate and prices are lower, and many people enjoy the rain on the water.
Boat race season in August and the Onam festival (August or September) bring crowds and colour to the region.
How to reach Alleppey from Pondicherry
By road
Most visitors reach Alleppey from Thekkady via Kottayam (about 4 hours) or from Munnar via Kochi. A direct drive from Pondicherry through Madurai, Theni and Kumily takes 11–12 hours, which we only suggest if you stop overnight on the way.
By train and air
Alappuzha railway station lies on the coastal line between Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram. There is no convenient direct train from Pondicherry; you would change at Chennai or travel to Ernakulam first. Cochin International Airport is about 85 km away.
Food in Alleppey
Food is one of the pleasures of a houseboat stay. The cook usually prepares Kerala meals with red rice, sambar, avial, thoran and pickles, and fish curry or fried karimeen (pearl spot), the prized backwater fish. Tell the crew in advance if you are vegetarian or want less spice. In town, try appam with stew, duck roast and tapioca with fish curry; toddy shops serve spicy local food, though they are best visited with someone who knows the area.

- Carry mosquito repellent; evenings on the water attract insects.
- Peak dates around Christmas and New Year sell out months ahead.
