Yercaud, in the Shevaroy Hills above Salem, is the closest real hill station to Pondicherry – about five hours by road – which makes it the easiest way to swap coastal humidity for cool air over a long weekend. It is smaller and quieter than Ooty or Kodaikanal, with a lake at its centre, coffee plantations all around, and viewpoints that look straight down to the plains.
This three-day trip uses a private car for the whole journey, including the local sightseeing, so you do not have to deal with hill-town taxi stands.

Families, couples and small groups looking for a short, low-effort break in the hills; travellers who get carsick on long ghat roads (the Yercaud climb is only about 30 km); and anyone who has already seen Kodaikanal or Ooty and wants somewhere calmer. It is not a trekking destination, but gentle walks are easy to fit in.

Why Yercaud for a short trip
Longer hill holidays from Pondicherry involve 7–9 hour drives each way. Yercaud’s shorter drive leaves a full, unhurried day in the hills even on a two-night trip. The sights are compact – most are within 10 km of the lake – so the second day can include rest time in the afternoon.

Best season
Yercaud is pleasant for most of the year. October to February brings cool, clear days and chilly nights; March to June is the main escape-from-the-heat season, when the plains are hot and the hills stay comfortable. The annual Yercaud Summer Festival, with flower shows, is usually held in May. Killiyur Falls flows best after the monsoon, roughly August to December, and can be a trickle in summer. Mist and rain can close viewpoints for short spells in the wet months.

Driving up and staying in Yercaud
The main road from Salem climbs through 20 hairpin bends and is well maintained, but it can be busy with local traffic at weekends; our drivers are used to hill roads and take it slowly. A second, longer and quieter road leaves Yercaud via Kuppanur, and we sometimes use it for the descent if you want a change of scenery. Yercaud has everything from simple lodges near the lake to resorts and coffee-estate bungalows spread across the plateau. Staying close to the lake means you can walk to the boat house and market in the evening; estate stays are quieter but need the car for every outing. Mobile signal and ATMs are available in the town centre, but can be patchy on the estates.
What to pack
A light jacket or sweater for the evenings (warmer layers from December to February), comfortable walking shoes, a rain jacket in the monsoon months and motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to it on bends. For Killiyur Falls, wear shoes with good grip and avoid the path after heavy rain.
