This short tour pairs two very different sides of western Tamil Nadu. First, the Isha Yoga Center outside Coimbatore, home to the 112-ft Adiyogi bust. Then Valparai, a quiet tea town in the Anamalai hills reached by one of the best-known ghat roads in the south.
It is a road trip in a private car with one driver throughout. Two nights in Coimbatore break the long drive from Pondicherry in each direction, and one night in Valparai gives you an evening and an early morning in the hills, which is when they are at their best.

Travellers who want a hill break without the crowds of Ooty or Kodaikanal, anyone curious to see the Isha centre, and nature lovers hoping for a glimpse of the endangered lion-tailed macaque. Valparai is quiet: there are few shops, no big attractions and little nightlife. People come for the tea gardens, the views and the wildlife, so this is a trip for slowing down rather than ticking off sights.

Adiyogi and the Isha Yoga Center
The Adiyogi bust, a steel figure of Shiva as the first yogi, was unveiled on Maha Shivaratri in February 2017 and is listed by Guinness World Records as the largest bust sculpture in the world. It stands 34 m (112 ft) tall in open ground in front of the Velliangiri hills. The wider campus also has the Dhyanalinga meditation space and other shrines, and visitors are asked to keep silence in some areas. Dress modestly, and expect big crowds on full-moon nights and during Maha Shivaratri.
Valparai: tea, forest and wildlife
Valparai lies at about 1,060 m in the Anamalai hills, inside a landscape of tea and coffee estates surrounded by the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. Coffee planting began in the area in the 19th century, and tea took over from around the 1890s; today dozens of estates cover the slopes. Patches of rainforest survive between the estates, and these are home to the lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, gaur, elephants and great hornbills.
Elephants and gaur often walk through estates and along roads, especially at dawn and dusk. Your driver will slow down or wait, and you should never get out of the car to take photographs of large animals.
Valparai e-pass and road rules
At the time of writing, every tourist vehicle entering Valparai needs an e-pass, issued through the Tamil Nadu e-pass portal at tnepass.tn.gov.in and checked at Aliyar. The number of vehicles allowed on weekends has been capped, and the forest check-posts are reported to close to tourist entry at night. We apply for the pass for your car and check the current rules before you travel; plan to reach Aliyar in daylight.
Best season
Valparai gets heavy rain in the southwest monsoon (June to September): the hills are very green and the waterfalls full, but visibility can be poor and leeches are common. October to March brings clearer views and cool nights; April and May are warmer on the plains but pleasant in the hills. Coimbatore is comfortable for most of the year.
