This road trip pairs two very different places west of Pondicherry. Hogenakkal is where the Kaveri enters Tamil Nadu through a gorge of dark rock, breaking into many channels and falls. Yelagiri is a small, relaxed hill station a few hours’ drive to the north-east, with a lake, orchards and easy walks.
Three days allow a night at each without long drives on the ghat roads after dark. It is a good choice for families and groups of friends looking for a short break with a mix of water and hills.
Hogenakkal: falls, rocks and coracles
The name comes from Kannada and is usually translated as ‘smoking rocks’, after the spray that rises where the water strikes the rock. The falls themselves are not very high – the tallest drop is around 20 m – but the spread of channels, islands and cliffs is impressive, especially after the monsoon. The rocks here are among the oldest in the region; carbonatites in the area have been dated to about two billion years.
The best way to see the gorge is from a coracle, a round boat of woven bamboo made waterproof, steered by local boatmen. Coracle rides, bathing and access to some viewpoints are regularly suspended when the Kaveri is in heavy flow, for example when water is released from the dams upstream. These decisions are made by the district administration at short notice, so check the latest news before travelling and be prepared to watch the falls from the viewpoints instead.
Yelagiri: a small hill station
Yelagiri sits a little over 1,000 m above sea level in Tirupattur district, on a plateau surrounded by peaks. The ghat road climbs through 14 hairpin bends, each named after a Tamil poet or patron such as Thiruvalluvar and Avvaiyar. The main sights are Punganur lake, an artificial lake with boating and a park; the nature park nearby; and the Swamimalai trail, a steep walk of about 3 km each way to one of the highest points in the hills. Jalagamparai falls, reached by a longer walk, is worth visiting mainly after the rains, as it dries up in summer.
Yelagiri is quiet and has limited nightlife or shopping, which is part of its charm. Resorts range from simple lodges to larger properties with gardens, and we can help you choose one.
Route at a glance
- Pondicherry → Hogenakkal: about 270 km via Tiruvannamalai and Dharmapuri
- Hogenakkal → Yelagiri: about 150 km via Dharmapuri and Tirupattur
- Yelagiri → Pondicherry: about 240 km via Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai
Best time to go
For Hogenakkal, the months after the monsoon, roughly September to January, bring the fullest falls, but coracle rides may be halted during heavy flows; the drier months that follow are more predictable for boating. Yelagiri is most pleasant from November to February. December and January are a good compromise for both. Weekends and school holidays are busy at both places, so weekdays are calmer.
Who this trip suits
Families with children, groups of friends and couples who want a short, relaxed break with some time on the water and a cool night in the hills. The drives are long on Days 1 and 3, but the roads are mostly good highways, and the car can stop whenever you need. Neither place requires hard walking unless you choose the Swamimalai trail.
Safety tips
