Timing a trip around a festival changes it completely. Temples that are calm on an ordinary day fill with processions, music and lamps; dancers perform against thousand-year-old stone; whole towns turn out for a chariot pulling. Many of South India's biggest festivals are within a day's drive of Pondicherry. Dates follow the Tamil or Malayalam calendar and move every year, so check the current year's dates before you book.

In Pondicherry

  • Pongal (mid-January) – the Tamil harvest festival, kept over several days with kolam designs, sweet pongal cooked outdoors and decorated cattle on Mattu Pongal.
  • International Yoga Festival (4–7 January) – run by Puducherry Tourism with workshops, competitions and cultural evenings; admission has been free.
  • Masi Magam (February–March) – deities from temples in and around Pondicherry are carried in procession to the sea at Vaithikuppam for a ritual bath.
  • Bastille Day (14 July) – the French community marks the day with a tribute at the French War Memorial, a torchlight procession along the Promenade and fireworks opposite the French Consulate.

Temple festivals in Tamil Nadu

  • Karthigai Deepam, Tiruvannamalai (November–December) – a ten-day festival at the Arunachaleswarar Temple ending with the Maha Deepam, a huge flame lit on top of Arunachala hill at dusk. Crowds run into lakhs, so plan the drive and parking early.
  • Natyanjali, Chidambaram (February–March, around Maha Shivaratri) – classical dancers from across India perform as an offering to Nataraja at the Thillai Nataraja Temple.
  • Mamallapuram Dance Festival, Mahabalipuram (December–January) – evening performances of Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Odissi and folk dance on an open-air stage by the monuments, supported by Tamil Nadu Tourism.
  • Sathaya Vizha, Thanjavur (Aippasi, October–November) – Raja Raja Chola's birth star is celebrated at the Brihadeeswarar Temple with rituals and cultural programmes. Nearby Thiruvaiyaru hosts the Thyagaraja Aradhana each December–January, when musicians sing the Pancharatna kritis together on the Kaveri bank.
  • Chithirai festival, Madurai (April–May) – the celestial wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, followed by Kallazhagar's entry into the Vaigai river.
  • Velankanni feast, Velankanni (29 August–8 September) – the eleven-day feast at the basilica draws pilgrims of every faith.

Further afield

Mysore Dasara (September–October) is Karnataka's state festival: the Mysore Palace is lit with close to a lakh bulbs each evening, and on Vijayadashami the Jamboo Savari procession carries the goddess Chamundeshwari on an elephant through the city. Add it to the Ooty, Coonoor and Mysore tour. In Kerala, Thrissur Pooram (April–May), near Guruvayur, is known for its caparisoned elephants and percussion.

Planning tips

  • Hotels fill and prices rise during big festivals – book well ahead, or stay in a nearby town and drive in.
  • Expect road closures and long walks from parking on the main days.
  • Dress modestly for temple festivals and follow the temple dress code; photography inside shrines is usually not allowed.
  • For a calmer visit, go a day before or after the main event.
  • Send us the festival and your dates on WhatsApp (+91 96265 65138); we will plan a route with car and driver and help with hotels. See also our temples page.
