This tour pairs the gentler side of the Nilgiris with its wild side. Two nights in Coonoor give you tea estates, gardens and viewpoints without Ooty’s crowds. Then the road drops to Mudumalai, a tiger reserve in dry deciduous forest on the Tamil Nadu side of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, for two nights among elephants, deer and langurs.
A final night in Ooty breaks the long journey home. It differs from our Ooty, Coonoor and Mysore tour by staying inside Tamil Nadu and giving more time to wildlife.
Coonoor: tea, gardens and viewpoints
Coonoor sits lower than Ooty and is milder and quieter. Sim’s Park, established in 1874, covers a steep hillside with trees and shrubs from several continents. Dolphin’s Nose, about 10 km from town, looks across a deep valley to Catherine Falls, and Lamb’s Rock on the same road has views over tea estates to the plains. Mornings are best for both; mist often rolls in after midday.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs between Mettupalayam, Coonoor and Ooty. Seats are limited and sell out early, so book your own tickets through Indian Railways if you want the ride; we will plan the car around your train.
Doddabetta and Ooty
Doddabetta, at 2,637 m, is the highest mountain in the Nilgiris, about 9 km from Ooty. A telescope house run by Tamil Nadu Tourism stands at the top. In Ooty itself, Ooty Lake has a boat house, and the Government Botanical Garden is a short drive away.
Mudumalai and the Theppakadu elephant camp
The Theppakadu elephant camp, run by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department on the banks of the Moyar, is one of the oldest elephant camps in India. Visitors can watch the feeding sessions, at the time of writing about 8.30–9 am and 5.30–6 pm. Private vehicles are not allowed into the core of the reserve, so safaris are only in forest department buses and jeeps from Theppakadu, sold at the reception on a first-come basis. Timings, charges and availability change and sessions can be cancelled in bad weather; we list the safari as optional and cannot promise seats or sightings.
Night traffic is restricted on roads through the reserve and the neighbouring forests, and stopping to feed or photograph animals at close range along them is not allowed. Our drivers keep to these rules and plan the drives in daylight.
Routes, e-pass and road rules
- Tourist vehicles registered outside the Nilgiris need an e-pass, applied for online before you reach the checkpost; we help with this
- The steep Kalhatty ghat between Ooty and Masinagudi has been closed to non-local vehicles, so this tour uses the Gudalur road, which is longer but easier
- The Mettupalayam–Coonoor ghat has many hairpin bends; we plan the climb in daylight
- Daily vehicle limits apply to the Nilgiris on busy days, so weekend and summer dates should be fixed early
Best time to go
October to May is the main season for the hills. For Mudumalai, the months after the monsoon, roughly October to February, are green and comfortable; March to May is hot and dry, when animals gather near water but parts of the forest may be closed for fire risk. The south-west monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain to the Gudalur side and occasional road closures.
