This short coastal trip links two very different places on the Bay of Bengal. Mahabalipuram is the Pallava port with its rock-cut temples and the Shore Temple. Pulicat, about 55 km north of Chennai, is a fishing town on a vast shallow lagoon, once the headquarters of the Dutch on the Coromandel coast and today one of the best places near Chennai to see flamingos.
It works best as a two-day trip from Pondicherry, with the night in Mahabalipuram and an early start for Pulicat so that you reach the lake in the morning, when the birds are active and the light is soft.
Mahabalipuram
The Shore Temple, the Pancha Rathas, Arjuna’s Penance and the cave temples are part of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are mostly from the 7th and 8th centuries, under the Pallava kings. A combined ticket covers the main monuments, and a guide helps you read the carvings. If you have seen Mahabalipuram before, add the Tiger Cave a few kilometres north or a stop at the Muttukadu backwaters on the way.
Pulicat lake and its birds
Pulicat lake stretches across the Tamil Nadu–Andhra Pradesh border and is separated from the sea by the barrier island of Sriharikota. It is the second largest brackish-water ecosystem in India after Chilika. The Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary protects the lagoon for migratory waterbirds, with greater flamingos the main attraction from about October to March, along with pelicans, painted storks, herons and many waders.
Most visitors see the lake by country boat with local fishermen from the Pazhaverkadu side. There is no fixed boat house, so availability and rules depend on the weather and the local authorities. Insist on life jackets, avoid going out in strong wind, and keep a respectful distance from the flocks.
The Dutch at Pulicat
Portuguese traders came to Pulicat in the 16th century, and the Dutch followed in the early 17th century, making it the centre of their Coromandel trade with Fort Geldria. Little of the fort survives, but the Dutch cemetery, laid out in the 17th century, still has carved tombstones of Dutch officials and merchants. It has been protected by the Archaeological Survey of India since 1921.
Best time to go
November to February is ideal for both places: the birds are at Pulicat and the weather is comfortable for walking around the monuments. The north-east monsoon (October to December) can bring heavy rain and rough water at Pulicat, when boat rides may stop. Summer from April to June is hot and the migratory birds are gone.
Good to know
- Day 2 is long; if you prefer a gentler pace, add a night in Chennai and visit Pulicat on a separate morning
- Facilities at Pulicat are basic, so carry water, a hat and binoculars
- Pulicat is a working fishing village; ask before photographing people
- The Andhra side of the lake, around Sriharikota, is a restricted area and not part of this trip
Route at a glance
- Pondicherry → Mahabalipuram: about 96 km on the East Coast Road, 2–2.5 hours
- Mahabalipuram → Pulicat: about 110–120 km via Chennai’s outer roads, 2.5–3 hours
- Pulicat → Pondicherry: about 200 km, 4.5–5 hours
- Pulicat → Chennai airport: roughly 70–75 km, if you end the trip in Chennai
Who this trip suits
Birdwatchers, photographers and travellers interested in colonial history who have already seen Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram, or who want to combine the two with something less visited. Children usually enjoy the boat ride and the flamingos, but the second day is long, so for families with young children we suggest adding a night in Chennai.
How to customise
- Swap Pulicat for the Vedanthangal bird sanctuary, as in the Vedanthangal and Mahabalipuram day trip
- Add Kanchipuram on Day 1, as in the Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram heritage tour
- Add a night in Chennai for museums and shopping
