This tour follows central Kerala from the temple town of Guruvayur to the port city of Kochi, with a night beside the biggest waterfall in the state at Athirappilly. It suits families and pilgrims who want temples and culture rather than backwaters and beaches, which are covered in our Kerala coast tour.
The long first leg is broken with a night in Coimbatore. From there it is under four hours to Guruvayur, and the remaining drives are short.
Guruvayur temple: rules to know
The Guruvayur Sri Krishna temple is one of the most visited temples in Kerala. Entry inside is for Hindus only, and the rule is strictly applied. Men must wear a mundu or veshti with the upper body bare (a shawl over the shoulders is allowed). Women wear a saree, half-saree or churidar with dupatta; jeans and other western wear are not permitted.
Darshan runs from the early hours of the morning to midday and again in the evening, with a break in the afternoon. Queues can last hours on weekends, holidays and auspicious days. Timings are set by the Guruvayur Devaswom and change for rituals, so check the official website before you go.
Punnathur Kotta, Thrissur and Kalamandalam
Punnathur Kotta, also called Anakotta, is a former palace about 3 km from the temple where the elephants offered to Guruvayurappan are kept; dozens live on the grounds. Mornings are best, when they are bathed and fed.
Thrissur, about 30 km away, is Kerala’s cultural capital. Its Vadakkunnathan temple stands on a hill in the middle of the Thekkinkadu Maidan, where the Thrissur Pooram festival brings decorated elephants and percussion ensembles each April or May. Kerala Kalamandalam at Cheruthuruthy, the state’s best-known school of classical arts, runs a guided morning programme on working days; it is closed in April and May and for some holidays, and must be booked ahead.
Athirappilly and Vazhachal falls
Athirappilly falls, on the Chalakudy river, is about 80 feet high and much wider than it is tall. Vazhachal falls is about 5 km upstream. Both are managed by the Kerala Forest Department under an eco-tourism model, with a common ticket and opening hours of about 8 am to 6 pm at the time of writing. The falls are most powerful from June to September; September to January balances good flow with safer paths. The path to the base can be closed when the river is high.
Kochi
Fort Kochi and Mattancherry hold layers of Portuguese, Dutch and British history alongside Jewish, Konkani and Gujarati trading communities. Plan your Kochi day around closures: Mattancherry Palace is closed on Fridays and the Paradesi Synagogue on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays.
Best time to go
October to February is the most comfortable period across this route. The monsoon from June to September brings the fullest waterfalls but heavy rain; Kerala is green and less crowded then. Thrissur Pooram in April or May is spectacular but very crowded and hot; book well ahead if you want to time the trip for it.
