The Kalvarayan (Kalrayan) Hills are a block of the Eastern Ghats on the western side of Kallakurichi district, between the Javadhu Hills to the north and the Shevaroys of Salem to the south-west. They cover roughly 1,000 sq km and rise in two broad tiers: the northern Chinna Kalvarayan, averaging about 2,700 feet, and the higher southern Periya Kalvarayan, averaging around 4,000 feet. Grass and scrub on the lower slopes give way to deciduous forest above about 800 metres, with pockets of shola on the high plateaus.

The Kallakurichi district administration describes the hills as a “poor man’s hill station”, and that is a fair summary: there is no lake promenade, no shopping street and very few hotels. What you get instead are waterfalls, forest roads, small tribal villages and real quiet, about four hours from Pondicherry.

Who the Kalvarayan Hills suit

These hills reward travellers who are happy with simple rooms and slow days: couples or friends looking for a short break from the coast, families with older children who enjoy a waterfall scramble, photographers and keen walkers. They are less suited to anyone who wants restaurants, organised activities or a resort pool. Elderly travellers should bear in mind the narrow ghat roads and the uneven paths to the falls. If in doubt, tell us who is travelling and we will suggest whether Kalvarayan or a better-served hill station fits your group.

People and history

The hills are home to Malayali (Malayali Gounder) tribal communities spread over more than 180 villages, who farm millets, paddy, tapioca and fruit on terraced slopes. Unusually, much of the area was run under a jagir system by three hereditary chieftains until 1976, when the jagirs were abolished and the hills came fully under state administration. Development has been slow, which explains both the poor roads in places and the unspoilt feel.

Things to see in the Kalvarayan Hills

Megam Falls

Megam Falls is the best-known waterfall in the hills and the one most visitors come for. Like all falls here it depends on rain: it runs well during and after the monsoons and can be thin by summer. Rocks are slippery and access may be restricted after heavy rain, so follow local instructions. See our Megam Falls guide for more.

Periyar Falls

Periyar Falls (not to be confused with the Periyar of Kerala) is the second waterfall promoted by the tourism department, and is usually combined with Megam Falls on the same day. There are about ten waterfalls across the hills in all, most of them seasonal and some reachable only on foot.

Gomukhi dam

At the eastern foot of the hills, the Gomukhi dam holds back a reservoir against a backdrop of forested slopes. A viewpoint on the ghat road above it looks back over the water and the farmland of the Kallakurichi plains, best in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon.

Vellimalai and the high plateau

Vellimalai, on the higher plateau, is the district’s suggested spot for watching clouds roll across the hilltops in the monsoon. The drive up through forest and terraced fields is half the point of the trip. The tourism department also lists a botanical garden and several small hill temples.

Kalvarayan summer festival

According to Tamil Nadu Tourism, a summer festival is celebrated on the hills every year in May, and it is the busiest time for local stays. Dates are announced shortly beforehand and can shift; check local news or ask us before you plan around it. See our festivals and culture page for other events in the region.

Best time to visit

For waterfalls, come from about August to January, after the south-west and north-east monsoon rains. October to February is the most pleasant time for walking, with cool mornings on the plateau. March to May is hot on the lower slopes, though the hilltops stay milder, and May brings the summer festival. Heavy rain can damage the ghat roads, so check conditions in the wet months.

How to reach the Kalvarayan Hills from Pondicherry

From Pondicherry the road runs west to Villupuram and on to Ulundurpet and Kallakurichi, about 120 km. From Kallakurichi it is roughly 55 km more to the hills, climbing past the Gomukhi dam. Allow about four hours in total. The ghat roads are narrow and steep in places, and fuel and repairs are scarce on top, so start with a full tank.

Our Kalvarayan Hills weekend covers the falls, the dam and the plateau with one night on or near the hills. If you would like a hill trip with more facilities, compare Yercaud or Kolli Hills, or see our waterfalls page.

Sample weekend plan

  • Day 1: Leave Pondicherry early, drive via Villupuram and Kallakurichi, stop at the Gomukhi dam viewpoint, and reach the hills by late morning; Megam and Periyar falls in the afternoon.
  • Day 2: Sunrise drive to Vellimalai and the high plateau, a walk through a village and farms, then back down the ghat and home to Pondicherry by evening.

Where to stay and eat

Accommodation on the hills is very limited – a few basic guesthouses and government or forest rest houses, which need advance booking. Many visitors stay in Kallakurichi or Salem and drive up for the day. Food is simple; carry water and snacks, especially for the falls. We can help you work out the most practical base.

Practical tips

  • Carry enough cash – ATMs are scarce on the hills.
  • Mobile signal is weak or absent in many areas.
  • Wear shoes with good grip for the waterfall paths.
  • Respect village privacy and ask before taking photographs.
  • Start the drive back down in daylight.
