Family trips go best when the driving is short and every day has something for both adults and children. This three-day holiday keeps Pondicherry as a single base – no packing and unpacking – and mixes the town’s sights with a day trip south to Chidambaram, one of Tamil Nadu’s most important Shiva temples, and the mangrove forest at Pichavaram, where children and adults alike tend to enjoy the boat ride through the green tunnels of the channels.
You travel in a private AC car, or a larger vehicle for bigger groups, with the same driver throughout. Timings are flexible, so nap times, meal breaks and slow starts can all be accommodated.

Why Chidambaram and Pichavaram
Chidambaram’s Thillai Nataraja Temple is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, the five Shiva temples associated with the elements; here the element is space (akasha). Its gold-roofed Chit Sabha, the sanctum of Nataraja, and its four towering gateways make it memorable even for children who are not interested in temples.
Pichavaram, about 15 km away, is one of the largest mangrove forests in India, a maze of small islands and waterways between the Vellar and Coleroon estuaries. The boat ride takes between half an hour and a couple of hours, depending on the route you choose. Winter brings many water birds. Combining the two makes a full but easy day with one long lunch break.
Best time to travel
November to February is the most comfortable season, and it coincides with school holidays around Christmas, so book early. The boats at Pichavaram and Chunnambar can be suspended in very heavy rain or rough weather, mostly in October–December. Summer (April–June) is hot; we then start early and keep the afternoons free for the hotel pool.

Tips for travelling with children
- Keep the Chidambaram day early: leaving by 7 am means the temple visit is done before the heat and the mangrove boat ride comes as a reward
- Life jackets are provided on the Pichavaram and Chunnambar boats; make sure small children wear them for the whole ride
- White Town footpaths are narrow and uneven, so a baby carrier is more practical than a pushchair
- Pack snacks, water and a small towel in the car; the driver can stop whenever needed
- The Ashram asks visitors to keep silent inside, so young children may be happier waiting outside with one parent
Temple dress code and packing
At Chidambaram, dress modestly: men in trousers or a dhoti, women in a saree, salwar or long skirt, with shoulders covered. Footwear is left outside and there are shoe-keeping counters. Some areas of the temple are closed to photography. For the mangroves, bring caps, sunscreen, mosquito repellent and drinking water; life jackets are provided on the boats. A change of clothes for the children on beach day saves a wet ride home.
