This list focuses on trips that are worth an overnight stay – places where a single day feels rushed.

1. Tiruvannamalai and Gingee (about 105 km)
Tiruvannamalai is one of the most important Shiva pilgrimage towns in Tamil Nadu, built around the Arunachaleswarar Temple at the foot of Arunachala hill. Many visitors walk the path around the hill, and the town has a long association with the sage Ramana Maharshi. On the way, stop at Gingee (about 67 km from Pondicherry), where a fort spreads across three rocky hills.
Weekend plan: Gingee fort early on Saturday, arrive in Tiruvannamalai for the evening temple visit, and spend Sunday morning on the hill path before driving back. Our Tiruvannamalai & Gingee trip can be stretched to two days.
2. Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram (about 96 km and 118 km)
Head up the East Coast Road to Mahabalipuram, whose Shore Temple, Five Rathas and giant rock relief form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stay overnight by the sea, then drive inland to Kanchipuram, a city of temples – Kailasanathar, Ekambareswarar and Varadharaja Perumal among them – and the home of Kanchipuram silk.

3. Chennai (about 150 km)
Chennai is often treated as just an airport, but it makes a good city weekend: the Marina seafront, the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, San Thome Basilica, Fort St George and the Government Museum at Egmore with its South Indian bronzes. On the way, DakshinaChitra heritage museum on the East Coast Road is worth a stop (closed on Tuesdays).
4. Chidambaram, Pichavaram and Tranquebar (about 64 km onwards)
Chidambaram is close enough for a day trip, but it is the start of a lovely coastal weekend. Visit the Nataraja Temple, take a rowing boat through the Pichavaram mangroves nearby, and continue south to Tharangambadi (Tranquebar), where Fort Dansborg recalls the Danish trading settlement founded in 1620. Stay overnight on the coast and return the next day.
5. Kumbakonam (about 130 km)
Kumbakonam is a temple town in the Kaveri delta and the base for the Navagraha circuit of nine temples dedicated to the planets. Nearby Darasuram’s Airavatesvara Temple is part of the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples, and Swamimalai is known for bronze casting. The town’s Mahamaham tank hosts a huge bathing festival every twelve years; the next is due in 2028.

6. Thanjavur (about 170 km)
Thanjavur was the capital of the Chola king Rajaraja I, who built the Brihadisvara Temple, completed around 1010 CE. The temple’s great tower is one of the most impressive sights in India, and the town also has a palace complex with an art gallery and the Saraswathi Mahal Library. Evening light on the temple is beautiful, so an overnight stay is well worth it.

7. Velankanni and Nagapattinam (about 160 km)
Velankanni is home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, one of India’s best-known Christian pilgrim centres, set beside a long beach. It is very busy during the annual feast from 29 August to 8 September and at Christmas, and calmer at other times. Combine it with a stop at Chidambaram or Tranquebar on the coastal route.
8. Trichy and Srirangam (about 205 km)
Trichy (Tiruchirappalli) has the Rock Fort temple, reached by a long flight of steps cut into the rock, with wide views over the Kaveri. Across the river, Srirangam’s Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of the largest temple complexes in India, and the Jambukeswarar Temple at Thiruvanaikaval is close by. 9. Yercaud (about 237 km)
Yercaud in the Shevaroy Hills above Salem is the nearest hill station to Pondicherry. Expect a lake with boating, viewpoints over the plains, coffee estates and, after the rains, Kiliyur Falls. 10. Yelagiri (about 241 km)
Yelagiri is a small, quiet plateau reached by a hairpin road, with Punganoor Lake, orchards and easy walks. Jalagamparai Falls nearby flows best after the northeast monsoon, around November to January. It suits travellers who want rest rather than sightseeing.

When to go: season by destination
Most of these trips are in the hot plains of Tamil Nadu, so the season matters more than you might expect.
- Temple towns (Tiruvannamalai, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Trichy, Kanchipuram): November to February is best. From March, stone floors become very hot by late morning, so start early.
- Coast (Mahabalipuram, Chidambaram, Tranquebar, Velankanni): December to March for calm seas and clear skies. The northeast monsoon, roughly October to December, can bring heavy rain and occasional cyclones on this coast.
- Hills (Yercaud, Yelagiri): pleasant for much of the year and a welcome escape from April to June, though that is also when they are busiest.
- Festival dates: full-moon nights in Tiruvannamalai, Karthigai Deepam (November–December) and the Velankanni feast (29 August to 8 September) are memorable but very crowded. Choose them deliberately, or avoid them.
Tips for weekend trips from Pondicherry
- Leave early on Saturday. Traffic builds through the morning, and temples are cooler and quieter before 10 am.
- Check temple timings: many close for a few hours in the afternoon.
- Book rooms ahead for long weekends and festival dates, when towns like Tiruvannamalai and Velankanni fill up.
- November to February is the most comfortable season for the plains. For the hills, October to May is generally best.
