Coimbatore – Kovai to locals – is Tamil Nadu’s second-largest city and a busy industrial centre, long called the Manchester of South India for its textile mills. It sits on the Noyyal river close to the Palakkad Gap, the break in the Western Ghats that links Tamil Nadu with Kerala, and the blue line of the hills is visible from much of the city.
Few people travel from Pondicherry just to see Coimbatore itself, but it is an excellent base. The Isha Yoga Centre and its giant Adiyogi statue lie 30 km west, the Marudhamalai temple is on the edge of the city, and within two or three hours’ drive are Ooty, Coonoor and Valparai.

Why visit Coimbatore
For many travellers the reason is the Adiyogi. For others Coimbatore is simply the gateway to the Nilgiris and the Anamalai hills, with a good airport and railway connections for the journey home. The city has a mild climate for the plains, good vegetarian food and plenty of hotels, which makes it a comfortable overnight stop on a longer road trip across Tamil Nadu.

Isha Yoga Centre and Adiyogi
The Isha Yoga Centre, founded by Sadhguru, lies at the foot of the Velliangiri mountains, about 30 km west of the city. Its best-known sight is Adiyogi, a steel bust of Shiva 34 metres (112 feet) high, unveiled on Maha Shivaratri, 24 February 2017. Guinness World Records lists it as the largest bust sculpture in the world. In the evening a 14-minute light and video show, the Adiyogi Divya Darshanam, is projected onto the statue (at 7:20 pm at the time of writing).
Inside the centre, the Dhyanalinga is a domed meditation space where visitors sit in silence; there are also shrines to Linga Bhairavi and bathing tanks (teerthakunds). At the time of writing, the Adiyogi and Dhyanalinga are open from 6 am to 8 pm daily and entry is free. Silence is expected inside the Dhyanalinga, and modest clothing is advisable. Marudhamalai temple
This hill temple to Murugan stands on a spur of the Western Ghats about 12–15 km north-west of the city centre, reached by a ghat road or by steps. It is one of the most important Murugan shrines in the Kongu region, and the views over Coimbatore from the top are worth the climb. Steps at the southern end of the temple lead to a small cave associated with the Pambatti Siddhar, a local saint. At the time of writing, the temple is open from about 5:30 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 8:30 pm.
Perur Pateeswarar temple
On the western edge of the city, beside the Noyyal river, the Perur temple is dedicated to Shiva as Pateeswarar. Tradition credits its founding to the early Chola king Karikala, and later Chola kings and other rulers added to it. Its highlight is the Kanaka Sabha, a hall with finely carved pillars showing Shiva in his many forms and a ceiling with carved stone chains.
Kovai Kutralam falls
About 32 km west of the city, below the Siruvani dam, this waterfall lies inside a forest area managed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. Visitors register at the gate and are taken part of the way by a forest department vehicle, then walk to the falls. At the time of writing it is open roughly from 10 am to 3:30 pm; it is closed when the water is dangerous after heavy rain, so check before you go.
Gass Forest Museum
On the Forest College campus, this natural history museum was founded in 1902 by the forester Horace Archibald Gass. It has wood samples, stuffed animals, insects and a 3D wildlife diorama added after its renovation in 2015. It makes a good hour for families.
Onward trips: Ooty, Coonoor and Valparai
Coimbatore is the natural jumping-off point for the hills. To reach Ooty, drive 35 km to Mettupalayam and climb the Nilgiri ghat road via Coonoor, or ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train from Mettupalayam while your car meets you at the top. Valparai, with its tea estates and wildlife, is about 100 km south via Pollachi, Aliyar and 40 hairpin bends.

Day 1: Pondicherry – Coimbatore
- Leave Pondicherry early and drive via Villupuram and Salem.
- Break for lunch around Salem or Perundurai.
- Continue straight to the Isha Yoga Centre for sunset and the evening Adiyogi show, then check in to your hotel in the city.
Day 2: Coimbatore sights, then onward
- Early visit to Marudhamalai temple.
- Perur temple and, if open, Kovai Kutralam falls.
- Afternoon drive to Valparai (cross the Aliyar forest checkpost before evening) or to Coonoor or Ooty.
How to reach Coimbatore from Pondicherry
By car, the usual route runs from Pondicherry to Villupuram and west to Salem, then along NH 544 past Sankagiri and Avinashi to Coimbatore. The road is four-lane for most of the way, with several toll plazas. Allow six and a half to seven and a half hours plus breaks. Coimbatore Junction is one of the busiest stations in Southern Railway, and Coimbatore International Airport has flights to major Indian cities, which is useful if you want to end your tour here.
Best time and weather
October to March is the most pleasant time, with warm days and cool nights. The city gets most of its rain from the northeast monsoon between September and November, while the Palakkad Gap brings a steady breeze during the southwest monsoon months. Summer (April to May) is hot but milder than much of Tamil Nadu. Around Maha Shivaratri (February or March) the Isha centre hosts an all-night celebration with very large crowds.
Food and shopping
Coimbatore is known for Kongunadu cooking, a regional style with its own spice blends and a love of coconut and lentils, and for its vegetarian meals and sweets. Shoppers come for cotton textiles and handloom sarees, and the city is a centre for wet grinders and jewellery manufacturing.

- Allow at least three hours at the Isha Yoga Centre, and more if you want to sit in the Dhyanalinga.
- Weekends and public holidays at Isha are crowded; weekday mornings are quieter.
