The Kalvarayan Hills (Kalrayan Hills) are a range of the Eastern Ghats spread across Kallakurichi and Salem districts. Tamil Nadu Tourism describes two sections: Chinna Kalvarayan in the north at about 2,700 feet and Periya Kalvarayan in the south at about 4,000 feet. The hills are home to Malayali tribal villages, and tourism here is still small and simple.
That is the point of this weekend. There are no busy lakesides or shopping streets, just a winding ghat road, a reservoir at the foot of the hills, seasonal waterfalls and long views. It suits people who have already done Yercaud or Yelagiri and want something quieter, closer to Pondicherry.
What you will see
Gomukhi dam
The Gomukhi dam near Kachirayapalayam holds back a reservoir at the foot of the hills that swells in the monsoon. The road up the ghat has a viewpoint that looks straight down on the water and the fields around it.
Megam and Periyar falls
Tamil Nadu Tourism lists Megam falls, at the foothills, as the best-known waterfall of the range, reached by a short trek down the hill. Watch your step on the rocks and keep away from the deep crevices at the base. Periyar falls, in the hills, is smaller and also seasonal. Both depend on the north-east monsoon, so they are usually best from September to December and can be dry in summer.
Vellimalai and the plateau
Vellimalai is the main village on top, with a small botanical garden, viewpoints and farmland: tapioca, millets and fruit trees. In the monsoon, cloud often sits on the higher ridges. A summer festival is held in the hills every May.
Best time to visit
September to January is the best period, when the falls have water, the hills are green and the days are pleasant. The summer months are warm and the falls are often dry, though the hills are still cooler than the plains. During heavy rain, the ghat road can have small landslips and the falls may be closed by the authorities, so check before you go.
Facilities and where to stay
Facilities in the hills are basic. There are very few places to stay on top and food options are limited to small local eateries, so this itinerary uses Kallakurichi as the overnight base, a short drive from the foot of the ghat. Carry water, snacks and some cash; mobile signal is patchy in parts of the hills. If you prefer a night in the hills, tell us and we will check what is available for your dates.
Driving the ghat road
The road up from Kachirayapalayam is narrow, with sharp bends and occasional buses. Our drivers take it slowly and avoid driving the ghat after dark, which is why the plan has you back down by evening. Anyone prone to motion sickness should sit in front and eat lightly before the climb.
Route at a glance
- Pondicherry → Villupuram → Kallakurichi: about 120 km, 2.5–3 hours
- Kallakurichi → Kachirayapalayam and the Gomukhi dam: a short drive to the foot of the hills
- Foot of the ghat → Vellimalai: allow about an hour of slow driving
- Total to the plateau: roughly 180 km, 4–4.5 hours
Who this weekend suits
Couples, small groups of friends and families who enjoy long drives, open views and simple food, and who do not need resort facilities. It is not a shopping or nightlife destination, and you should expect basic toilets and few restaurants on top. Photographers will like the early mornings, when mist sits in the valleys and the light is soft over the reservoir.
How to customise
- Make it a day trip by skipping the overnight stay and visiting only the dam, the viewpoint and Megam falls
- Combine with Tiruvannamalai on the way back for the temple and Ramana ashram
- Try other hill weekends such as the Kolli Hills getaway or the Javadhu Hills and Tiruvannamalai weekend

Frequently asked questions
How far is Kalvarayan Hills from Pondicherry?
Kallakurichi, the base town, is about 120 km from Pondicherry. The plateau around Vellimalai is roughly another 40–55 km up the ghat road, so allow 4–4.5 hours each way to the top.
When is the best time to see Megam falls?
September to December, after the north-east monsoon rains. The falls are seasonal and can be dry in summer.
Are there hotels in Kalvarayan Hills?
Very few. Most visitors stay in Kallakurichi, which has more hotels and restaurants, and drive up for the day.
Is Kalvarayan Hills suitable for a family trip?
Yes, for families who like nature and quiet. The viewpoints and the dam are easy, but the walk down to Megam falls is rocky and needs care with small children.
