That makes timing everything: arrive in the wrong month and you may find a dry rock face at the end of a long road. This guide compares the main waterfalls within reach of Pondicherry by car, with approximate road distances, the months when they usually have water, and what the visit is actually like on the ground.

Understanding the two monsoons
Tamil Nadu gets rain from two monsoons, and the waterfalls follow them. The southwest monsoon, roughly June to September, soaks the Western Ghats, which feed the Kaveri and the falls at Courtallam. The northeast monsoon, roughly October to December, brings most of the rain to the Eastern Ghats hills closer to Pondicherry – Yercaud, Yelagiri and Kolli Hills.
The practical rule: for the Eastern Ghats falls, go from about October to January; for Courtallam, go from June to September; for Hogenakkal, go when the Kaveri is flowing well but not in flood, which usually means after the monsoon rains upstream have eased. From March to May, many of the smaller falls shrink to a trickle.
1. Hogenakkal Falls (Kaveri river)
Hogenakkal is where the Kaveri enters Tamil Nadu from Karnataka and breaks over a wide shelf of rock into many channels. The drops are not high – around 20 metres – but the volume of water and the gorge below make it the most impressive river scene in the region. The rocks here include carbonatites that geologists date to around two billion years.
The signature experience is a ride in a coracle, a round boat of bamboo known locally as a parisal, which the boatmen steer through the gorge close to the falling water. Riverside stalls also fry the fresh fish caught in the gorge.
Distance: about 270–320 km depending on the route, via Dharmapuri (46 km from the falls). Allow six to seven hours each way, so plan at least one night nearby.
Season and safety: the flow depends on releases and rain upstream. When the river runs high, the district authorities suspend coracle rides and bathing, sometimes for weeks. 2. Agaya Gangai, Kolli Hills
Kolli Hills in Namakkal district is famous for its approach road, which climbs through 70 numbered hairpin bends. On the plateau, Agaya Gangai is a multi-tiered fall of the Aiyaru river, dropping roughly 90 metres (about 300 feet) into a forested valley.
The path starts beside the Arapaleeswarar Temple, a Shiva temple, and goes down more than a thousand steps to the base of the falls. Going down is quick; the climb back up is the hard part and takes most people an hour or more. It is not suitable for anyone with knee or heart problems, and the steps get slippery after rain.
Kolli Hills has easier falls too. Masila Falls is a short walk from the road, and Namma Aruvi is a small fall reached by a brief path – better choices for children and older travellers.
Distance: about 240–250 km, five to six hours including the ghat road. Season: the falls carry the most water after the monsoons, typically from around August to January. See our Kolli Hills getaway.
3. Kiliyur Falls, Yercaud
Kiliyur Falls lies about 3 km from the lake in Yercaud and drops about 90 metres (300 feet) into the Kiliyur valley. It is fed largely by overflow from Yercaud Lake and the surrounding streams, so it is seasonal – strong after good rains, weak or dry in summer.
Reaching the base means a steep walk down a path with a couple of hundred uneven steps. It is manageable for fit adults but tiring for young children and elderly travellers, who may prefer the view from the top.
Distance: Yercaud is about 237 km from Pondicherry, five to six hours by car. Season: usually best from around October to January. Combine it with the rest of the hill station on our Yercaud Hill Getaway.
4. Jalagamparai Falls, near Yelagiri
Jalagamparai is a modest fall of around 15 metres (50 feet) in the hills below Yelagiri, with a pool at the base and a small Shiva temple nearby. By road it is some distance from the Yelagiri plateau – Tamil Nadu Tourism puts it roughly 37 km from the Yelagiri bus stand – though walkers also reach it on a trek.
Distance: Yelagiri is about 241 km from Pondicherry. Season: November to February, after the northeast monsoon. Facilities at the falls are limited, so carry water and snacks, and avoid the area during heavy rain.
5. Courtallam (Kutralam), Tenkasi district
Courtallam is a cluster of waterfalls on the Chittar river at the foot of the Western Ghats, about 5 km from Tenkasi. The best known are the Main Falls (Peraruvi), the Five Falls (Aintharuvi), where the water splits into five streams, and Old Courtallam. Unlike most falls in Tamil Nadu, these are designed for bathing, with separate areas for men and women, and bathing in them is the whole point of a visit. The town also has the Kutralanathar Temple with its Chitra Sabha, one of the five halls associated with Nataraja.
Distance: roughly 500 km, around ten hours – too far for a weekend. It works best as an add-on to Madurai or a longer southern tour such as Madurai, Rameswaram & Kanyakumari.
Season: the ‘saaral’ season of the southwest monsoon, roughly June to September, when a fine drizzle hangs over the hills. Outside those months the flow can drop sharply. Bathing is stopped when flash floods are expected, so follow police and district instructions.
Falls on the way to the Western Ghats
If you are already heading to the big hill stations, several waterfalls come along for free. Silver Cascade sits right beside the ghat road up to Kodaikanal, Pykara Falls is on the route out of Ooty towards Mysore, and Munnar has roadside falls through the tea estates in the rainy months. Safety and planning tips
- Never bathe where it is not permitted. Currents at Hogenakkal and flash floods in the hills cause deaths almost every year.
- Access to falls, coracle rides and ghat roads can be closed at short notice during heavy rain. Check with the local forest or district office, and keep a backup plan for the day.
- Wear shoes with good grip; bare feet and flip-flops are a bad idea on wet steps.
- Carry a dry bag for phones and a change of clothes if you plan to get wet.
- Hairpin roads such as the Kolli Hills ghat are slow. Start early so you are not driving down in the dark.
- Weekends and holidays are crowded at every fall. A weekday visit is noticeably calmer.

Most of these waterfalls work best as part of a two- or three-day trip rather than a dash there and back. A car with driver makes it easy to combine, say, Hogenakkal with Yelagiri, or Kolli Hills with a night in the hills.
