Mysore – officially Mysuru – was the capital of the Wodeyar kings, who ruled the Kingdom of Mysore for centuries. It is a relaxed, green city of wide roads, palaces and public buildings, with a strong sense of its royal past. It is also the setting for Dasara, one of the grandest festivals in South India.
From Pondicherry, it is about 446 km by road, most of it on highways through Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru. Mysore pairs naturally with Ooty, which lies across the forest to the south, and with Coorg to the west.

Why visit Mysore
Mysore offers a very different flavour from the temple towns of Tamil Nadu. The palaces, the Indo-Saracenic architecture and the history of Tipu Sultan and the Wodeyars make it one of the best places in the south for heritage. The city is also known for silk, sandalwood, incense and a sweet – Mysore pak – that is sold all over India.
It is easy to explore with a family: sights are close together, the city is less hectic than Bengaluru, and there are gardens, a well-known zoo and museums to fill a couple of days.
Top things to see in Mysore
Mysore Palace
The present palace, also called Amba Vilas, was built between 1897 and 1912 after the old wooden palace burned down, to a design by the British architect Henry Irwin. Inside are the ornate marriage hall with its stained-glass ceiling, the durbar hall with carved pillars, and galleries of paintings and royal belongings. On Sundays and public holidays the palace is lit with nearly one hundred thousand bulbs, at the time of writing from about 7 pm to 7:45 pm, and daily during Dasara. Check current timings before your visit. Footwear must be left at the counter.
Chamundi Hill
The Chamundeshwari Temple stands on top of Chamundi Hill, just outside the city, and the goddess is the family deity of the Wodeyars. You can drive to the top or climb the stone steps – roughly a thousand of them – passing a large monolithic Nandi (Shiva’s bull) about two-thirds of the way up. The hilltop also gives a view over the city and the palace.
Srirangapatna
About 15 km from Mysore, this island town on the Kaveri was Tipu Sultan’s capital. See the Ranganathaswamy Temple, the remains of the fort, the spot where Tipu fell in 1799, and Daria Daulat Bagh, his summer palace, whose walls are covered in painted murals. Tipu’s mausoleum, the Gumbaz, is nearby.
Somanathapura
The Keshava Temple at Somanathapura, built in 1268 under the Hoysalas, is one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture, with a star-shaped plan and extremely detailed carving. It is about 35 km from Mysore and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Together with other Hoysala temples it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas’.

A realistic plan from Pondicherry
Mysore is a full day’s drive, so allow at least four days for a short trip, or combine it with the hills:
- Mysore only (4 days): Day 1 drive to Mysore via Tiruvannamalai and Bengaluru. Day 2 palace, Chamundi Hill, Devaraja Market and the palace illumination if it is a Sunday. Day 3 Srirangapatna, Somanathapura and Brindavan Gardens. Day 4 drive back.
- Ooty, Coonoor and Mysore (6–7 days): go up to Ooty via Salem and Mettupalayam, then descend through Mudumalai and Bandipur to Mysore and return via Bengaluru. This is our Ooty, Coonoor and Mysore tour.
- Mysore and Coorg (5–6 days): add two nights in Coorg, about three hours west.
- On the way: Tiruvannamalai lies on the outbound route, and a stop at Arunachaleswarar Temple breaks the drive well.
Best time to visit and weather
Mysore has a mild climate compared with coastal Tamil Nadu. October to February is the most pleasant period, with warm days and cool mornings. March to May is hot in the afternoons. The monsoon from June to September brings moderate rain.
Dasara, held over ten days in September or October, is the city’s biggest event. The palace is lit every evening, there are cultural programmes, and on Vijayadashami a decorated elephant procession, the Jamboo Savari, carries the idol of Chamundeshwari through the streets. Hotels fill early and prices rise, so plan months ahead if you want to be there.
How to reach Mysore from Pondicherry
By road
The main route runs Pondicherry – Tindivanam – Tiruvannamalai – Krishnagiri – Hosur – Bengaluru, then the Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway. Crossing Bengaluru can add time, so an early start helps. An alternative is to reach Mysore from Ooty through the forests of Mudumalai and Bandipur, where the road is closed to traffic at night.
By train and air
Mysuru Junction has frequent trains from Bengaluru and direct services from Chennai. Bengaluru’s international airport is the main gateway, around three and a half to four hours away by road. Mysore airport has only limited flights.
Food and shopping
Try Mysore masala dosa, with its red chutney spread inside, and the soft, ghee-rich Mysore pak – the city has sweet shops associated with its creation. Local meals feature bisi bele bath, ragi mudde and filter coffee. For shopping, the government-run outlets for Mysore silk and sandalwood products guarantee authenticity; Devaraja Market is the place for incense, kumkum, fruit and flowers.
