Bengaluru to Pondicherry by road: the two routes
Via Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai (about 320 km)
Leave Bengaluru on the Hosur road, continue to Krishnagiri, then cut east to Tiruvannamalai – about 214 km from Bengaluru and 103 km before Pondicherry. The Arunachaleswarar Temple below Arunachala hill is one of the largest temple complexes in South India and a good reason to break the journey. Gingee Fort is about 39 km further on, a short detour on the way to Pondicherry. Parts of the road east of Krishnagiri are narrower and slower than the highway, so allow extra time.
Via Vellore (about 348 km)
This route follows the main highway to Vellore, about 195 km from Bengaluru, then turns south-east to Pondicherry. It is longer but more of it is on the main highway. In Vellore, the Sripuram Golden Temple and the moated Vellore Fort both make worthwhile stops; Vellore is about 155 km from Pondicherry.
If you have a spare day, the hill station of Yelagiri is a detour off this side of the route.
Bengaluru to Pondicherry by bus
Karnataka’s state transport (KSRTC), Puducherry’s PRTC and many private operators run between the two cities, with most departures in the evening so you arrive in the morning. Expect about seven to nine hours. Sleeper and semi-sleeper coaches are the most comfortable for the overnight trip; book ahead for Friday nights and long weekends.
Bengaluru to Pondicherry by train

Which option should you choose?
- Want to see the way: drive or take a car with driver and stop at Tiruvannamalai or Vellore.
- Short on time: an overnight bus or the Friday train saves a day.
- Families and groups: a car with driver is the most relaxed – the driver knows the slower stretches and the good food stops.
A relaxed two-day plan
Day 1: leave Bengaluru early, reach Tiruvannamalai by late morning, visit the Arunachaleswarar Temple, then continue to Gingee Fort in the afternoon and on to Pondicherry for the evening.
