Chennai to Pondicherry is one of the most travelled weekend routes in Tamil Nadu: about 150–170 km, or roughly three to three and a half hours by road. You can drive down the coast on the East Coast Road (ECR), take the faster inland highway, catch a direct train from Chennai Egmore or ride one of the many buses.

This guide compares the options, with distances measured on the actual roads, so you can pick what suits your group, your luggage and your starting point in Chennai.

How far is Pondicherry from Chennai?

  • By the coast (ECR, via Mahabalipuram): about 154 km from Chennai Central.
  • By the inland highway (GST Road / NH32, via Chengalpattu and Tindivanam): about 166–168 km.
  • From Chennai airport: about 146 km.
  • From Kilambakkam bus terminus (on GST Road, south Chennai): about 133 km.

Without traffic the drive takes about two and a half hours, but leaving the city usually adds time – plan on three to three and a half hours door to door, more on Friday evenings and holiday weekends.

Chennai to Pondicherry by road: ECR or GST Road?

East Coast Road (ECR) – the scenic route

The ECR runs close to the sea through fishing villages and casuarina groves. Mahabalipuram is about 58 km from Chennai Central, roughly a third of the way, which makes it the natural stop: the Shore Temple and the Five Rathas are UNESCO World Heritage monuments and need an hour or two. From Mahabalipuram it is about 96 km more to Pondicherry. Auroville lies just north of Pondicherry, about 15 km from the town centre, so it is easy to visit on the way in or on a separate morning.

GST Road / NH32 – usually quicker from the south and west of the city

The inland highway through Chengalpattu and Tindivanam is the main route for buses and lorries. It is often the quicker choice if you start near the airport, Tambaram or the southern suburbs. There is less to see, but Gingee Fort is a short detour west of Tindivanam if you leave early.

Both roads have toll plazas, so keep FASTag topped up if you drive yourself. With a car and driver the driver handles the route, tolls and parking.

Chennai to Pondicherry by train

Direct trains run from Chennai Egmore to Puducherry station, which is in the town itself. At the time of writing there are early-morning departures (an express around 6:10 am and a MEMU around 6:35 am) and an evening express (16115, around 6:10 pm), each taking about three and a half to four hours. Timetables change, so check the current times and book on IRCTC.

Many more trains stop at Villupuram, about 45 km from Pondicherry; from there you can continue by bus or taxi.

Chennai to Pondicherry by bus

Government buses (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry state transport) and private operators run frequently. Since the end of 2023 most long-distance government buses towards the south leave from the Kilambakkam bus terminus (Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus) on GST Road. Some buses run along the ECR via Mahabalipuram, so check the route and boarding point when you book. Expect about three to four hours. Tamil Nadu state buses can be booked on TNSTC.

Which option should you choose?

  • Families, groups and luggage: a car with driver – door to door, with a stop at Mahabalipuram on the ECR.
  • Travelling light, on a budget: the bus, or the direct train if the timing suits you.
  • Arriving at Chennai airport: a car from the airport is simplest; the airport is about 146 km from Pondicherry.

Making a weekend of it

Two nights is a comfortable minimum: one day for the French Quarter and the promenade, one for Auroville and the beaches. If you have a third day, Mahabalipuram on the way back or a day trip to Gingee Fort fits well. Our tour packages can start from Chennai as well as Pondicherry – send us your dates on WhatsApp.
