Parvathamalai is a sacred hill in the Eastern Ghats, about 25–30 km north-west of Tiruvannamalai, near the villages of Thenmathimangalam and Kadaladi. On its summit, at around 4,000 feet according to trekking guides, stands a small stone temple to Lord Mallikarjuna (Shiva).

For local pilgrims the climb is an act of devotion, done barefoot by many. For visitors it is one of the most exciting day treks within reach of Pondicherry – a long staircase through forest followed by a near-vertical rock face climbed with the help of iron rods, chains and ladders.

The route

There are two approaches. The more popular one starts from the Sri Pachaiyamman temple at Thenmathimangalam, where there is a forest check post; the shorter and steeper Kadaladi route joins it higher up. Trekking guides put the Thenmathimangalam trail at about 5–6 km one way, taking 2.5–4 hours to climb and a full 7–8 hours for the round trip with rests.

  • Lower section: past small shrines to Hanuman and Veerabhadra, then roughly 1,200 stone steps through thick scrub forest.
  • Middle section: a rocky path along the ridge to the junction with the Kadaladi trail.
  • Kadapparai: the famous last stretch, a steep bare rock face climbed using iron rods set into the rock, chains and steel ladders, followed by Idukku Paarai, a narrow squeeze between boulders that allows one person at a time.
  • Summit: the small temple and wide views over the plains, lakes and surrounding hills.

Rules and permits at the time of writing

The hill lies in the Parvathamalai Reserved Forest, managed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. At the time of writing, no advance permit or online booking is needed, but there is a forest check post at the start, so carry a government photo ID. Night trekking is not allowed, forest notices have asked climbers not to start after about 3 PM, and camping on the hill is not permitted.

Rules can change at short notice – especially around festivals, full-moon days and in fire season – so confirm locally before you set out.

Is it safe? Who should go

Parvathamalai is a moderate-to-difficult trek. The steps are tiring but manageable for a reasonably fit person; the Kadapparai section needs a head for heights, both hands free and good grip. People with a fear of heights, heart or knee problems, and small children should not attempt the upper section.

The rock is slippery when wet, so avoid the climb in or just after rain, and in the heat of April–June the exposed rock becomes very hot. Crowds of pilgrims on full-moon days and festivals can cause queues on the iron rails and ladders, which makes the narrow sections slower and riskier.

Practical tips

  • Start at first light to climb in the cool and be down well before dark.
  • Water and snacks: carry at least 2–3 litres of water per person and some food; there are small stalls on the lower steps and the Veerabhadra shrine sometimes offers free food, but do not rely on them.
  • Shoes and gloves: wear trekking shoes with a good grip; thin gloves help on the hot iron rails.
  • Pack light: use a small backpack so both hands are free on the rock face.
  • Leave no trace: bring all plastic back down.
  • Respect the temple: dress modestly and remove footwear at the summit shrine.

Visiting from Pondicherry

Thenmathimangalam is roughly 135–140 km from Pondicherry, about 3 hours by car via Tiruvannamalai. Because you need to start the climb at dawn, the best plan is to stay overnight in Tiruvannamalai, trek the next morning and drive back in the evening. On request, we can extend our Tiruvannamalai and Gingee trip or the Javadhu Hills and Tiruvannamalai weekend by a day for Parvathamalai; the car waits at the base while you climb. If you want a gentler outing, consider the Arunachaleswarar Temple and the Girivalam path instead. See our trekking and adventure page for more.
