Most pilgrims from Pondicherry go to Tirupati and back in two days. This three-day circuit adds the temples and history that sit just off that route: the Ganesha temple at Kanipakam, the Vijayanagara fort at Chandragiri, and Srikalahasti, one of the five great Shiva temples of the elements.

It is planned around one fixed point, your Tirumala darshan. We do not book darshan; you book it on the official TTD website, and we build the drives around your slot. If you only want Tirumala, see the shorter Tirupati darshan tour.

Kanipakam

The Varasiddhi Vinayaka temple at Kanipakam, about 11 km from Chittoor and 68 km from Tirupati, is one of the best-known Ganesha temples in Andhra Pradesh. The deity is believed by devotees to be self-manifested, rising from a well. Weekends and Vinayaka Chaturthi bring large crowds.

Chandragiri Fort

Chandragiri Fort was fortified around 1000 CE by local Yadava rulers, taken by the Vijayanagara empire in the 14th century, and became one of its capitals after the defeat at Talikota in 1565. The three-storey Raja Mahal now holds an archaeological museum of sculptures, weapons and coins, and the two-storey Rani Mahal stands nearby.

According to Andhra Pradesh Tourism, the fort is open from 10 am to 5 pm and closed on Fridays, with a sound and light show in Telugu and English in the evenings (at about 7 pm and 8 pm from March to October and 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm from November to February), at the time of writing. If your Day 1 falls on a Friday, we can move Chandragiri to the morning of Day 3 instead.

Tirumala darshan: what you need to know

  • Book darshan, sevas and any TTD rooms only through the official sites tirumala.org or ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in
  • Carry the ID you used for booking; the name must match
  • Darshan slots and waiting times vary widely by day and season, so we keep Day 2 free of other fixed plans
  • Our car takes you up and down the ghat road; vehicles are checked at the Alipiri toll gate

Srikalahasti

The Srikalahasteeswara temple, about 36 km from Tirupati, represents air (vayu) among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams; the others include the fire linga at Tiruvannamalai and the space (akasha) linga at Chidambaram. The temple is also widely known for the Rahu-Ketu pooja, believed to ease the astrological effects of those two shadow planets. The pooja is performed daily and tickets are sold at the temple; fees and timings change, so check on arrival.

The temple is open from early morning to night. If you are doing the full set of element temples, see our Pancha Bhoota Sthalam tour.

Best time to go

October to February is the most comfortable season. April and May are very hot in the plains around Tirupati and Srikalahasti. The Brahmotsavam at Tirumala, usually in September or October, and long weekends bring the heaviest crowds, so book darshan and hotels well ahead.

  • Tirupati → Tirumala: about 20–25 km up the ghat road, 45–60 minutes

  • Srikalahasti → Pondicherry: about 260 km, 5.5–6 hours

Who this tour suits

Families and pilgrims who want more than a quick Tirumala visit, and travellers who enjoy history as well as temples. The pace is steady rather than rushed, but Day 1 and Day 3 are full days in the car. Older travellers who find long drives tiring can add a night in Srikalahasti or Chennai so that the return journey is shorter.

How to customise

  • Start with the Sripuram Golden Temple at Vellore, as in the Vellore day trip
  • Add a night so that Srikalahasti and the drive home are on separate days
  • End in Chennai instead of Pondicherry; Srikalahasti is closer to Chennai
  • Read our temples and pilgrimage guide for other circuits
