Most people drive to Tirupati for darshan at Tirumala and drive straight back. Yet only a short drive west of the town, at Chandragiri on the Swarnamukhi river, stands the palace of the last great capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. Its pale, many-tiered Raja Mahal is one of the best-preserved Vijayanagara palace buildings anywhere, and the quiet grounds are a welcome contrast to the crowds of the pilgrim town.

The fort is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and the palaces house an ASI museum.

History of Chandragiri

A fort existed here by around 1000 CE under local Yadava rulers. It came under the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century and grew in importance after the empire’s defeat at Talikota in 1565, when the rulers withdrew south. After Penukonda was attacked by the Golconda Sultanate, the Aravidu kings made Chandragiri one of their capitals.

Chandragiri has a link with modern Chennai. In 1639, the English East India Company received a grant of the coastal land on which it built Fort St George, the beginning of Madras, from the Vijayanagara court then based at Chandragiri and its local governors. The fort later passed to the Golconda Sultanate in 1646 and to Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1782 before declining into ruins.

What to see

  • Raja Mahal: a three-storeyed palace built of stone, brick and lime mortar, decorated with stucco and topped by tiered towers in the style of temple vimanas. No timber was used in its structure. It now houses the museum.
  • Rani Mahal: a smaller two-storeyed building nearby with similar arches; despite the name, it may have been used by a military commander rather than the queen.
  • The museum: set up in 1988, it displays stone and metal sculptures of Shaiva, Vaishnava and Jain traditions, Chola and Vijayanagara bronzes, weapons, coins and documents, and statues of Krishnadevaraya and his queens.
  • The upper fort: the fortifications climb the rocky hill behind the palaces. Ruined temples and walls are scattered across the site; the climb is steep and best done in the cool of the morning.

Sound and light show

The evening sound and light show, narrating the history of Chandragiri and the Vijayanagara rulers on the facade of the Raja Mahal, was relaunched in September 2024 after being suspended for six years. At the time of writing there are Telugu and English shows each evening, starting earlier in the winter months, with a separate ticket. Timings and languages change, so confirm locally or with Andhra Pradesh Tourism before you go.

Timings and tickets

At the time of writing the museum is open from about 10 AM to 5 PM and is closed on Fridays. The ASI charges a small ticket for Indian visitors and a higher rate for foreign visitors. Check before you go, as timings and fees change.

Tips for your visit

  • Fit it around darshan: Tirumala darshan slots are unpredictable, so Chandragiri works best on the afternoon before or after your darshan day.
  • Avoid Fridays if you want to see the museum.
  • Bring water and a hat: there is little shade on the fort hill.
  • Photography: the Raja Mahal glows in the late afternoon sun; arrive by about 4 PM.
