Tiruchirappalli, usually called Trichy, sits on the Kaveri river at the head of the delta. It was an early Chola centre and later passed through the hands of the Pallavas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara rulers and the Nayaks of Madurai, before becoming a battleground between the British and French in the 18th century. Its landmark is the Rockfort, an ancient outcrop topped by a temple, and across the river lies Srirangam, one of the largest functioning temple complexes in the world.
Trichy is the natural midpoint between Thanjavur and Madurai, and a good overnight stop on any longer temple tour from Pondicherry.

Why visit Trichy
Srirangam alone is a reason to come: a temple town enclosed within seven concentric walls, with shops, homes and markets inside the outer rings and the shrine of Vishnu as Ranganatha at the centre. Add the view from the Rockfort, the water temple of Thiruvanaikaval and a dam built by an early Chola king, and Trichy offers a lot in a compact area.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam
Set on an island between the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers, the temple covers about 156 acres and has seven enclosures (prakarams) and 21 gopurams. The main Rajagopuram, about 73 metres tall, was only completed in 1987 with support from the Ahobila Mutt. The temple is the foremost of the 108 Divya Desams sacred to Vishnu. Inside, look for the Sesharaya mandapa with its rearing-horse pillars and the thousand-pillared hall. The biggest festival is Vaikunta Ekadasi in December–January, when the northern gate (Paramapada Vasal) is opened.
Rockfort and Ucchi Pillayar Temple
The Rockfort (Malaikottai) is a massive rock rising from the old town. A covered stairway of over 400 steps cut into the rock leads past the Thayumanaswamy Temple halfway up to the small Ucchi Pillayar (Ganesha) shrine at the summit. The view over the city, the Kaveri and the gopurams of Srirangam is superb, especially at sunset. There are also Pallava-era rock-cut cave temples at the lower levels.
Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval
Close to Srirangam, this large Shiva temple is the Pancha Bhoota Sthalam for water. The lingam in the sanctum sits over an underground spring, and water seeps up around it. The temple has five enclosures and fine pillared corridors, and it is usually calmer than its neighbour.
Kallanai and Samayapuram
Kallanai, the Grand Anicut, is a stone dam across the Kaveri traditionally credited to the Chola king Karikalan, around the 2nd century CE, and it is still used to divert water into the delta. It lies about 15 km east of the city and is a pleasant stop on the way to Thanjavur. North of Trichy on the highway, the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple is one of the most visited goddess temples in Tamil Nadu.

Day 1: Pondicherry – Trichy
- Leave early and drive via Villupuram and Perambalur.

- Afternoon rest at the hotel; climb the Rockfort in the late afternoon for sunset.
- Evening walk through the market streets below the rock.
Day 2: Srirangam, Thiruvanaikaval and Kallanai
- Early morning at Srirangam, allowing two to three hours.
- Jambukeswarar Temple at Thiruvanaikaval before it closes at midday.
- Lunch, then Kallanai on the road east.
- Continue to Thanjavur for the night, or head on to Madurai.
How to reach Trichy from Pondicherry
The fastest route joins the national highway at Villupuram and runs south-west through Ulundurpet and Perambalur – a good four-lane road for most of the way. Allow four to four and a half hours with a short break. An alternative is to go via Kumbakonam and Thanjavur, which is longer but lets you see temples on the way. Trains run from Villupuram to Tiruchirappalli Junction, and Trichy airport has domestic and international flights, which makes it a convenient exit point after a southbound tour.
For an overnight stay, hotels near the Central Bus Stand and Cantonment area are convenient for the highway and the airport, while staying near Srirangam puts you close to the temple for an early start. We can suggest options for either.
Best time and weather
November to February is the best period, with pleasant mornings and moderate afternoons. Trichy is inland and gets very hot from March to June, when temperatures can exceed 40 °C; climbing the Rockfort is then best left for early morning or evening. Rain is heaviest from October to December. Vaikunta Ekadasi at Srirangam (December–January) is spectacular but draws huge crowds.
Food and local specialities
Trichy has plenty of vegetarian restaurants serving tiffin and full meals, and Srirangam in particular is known for simple, traditional Brahmin-style vegetarian food around the temple streets. In the city you will also find good biryani and non-vegetarian meals. The bazaar below the Rockfort is the place for textiles, brassware and everyday shopping.
Practical tips
- Temples generally open early (Srirangam from around 6 am) and have breaks during the day; check timings before you go.
- Wear modest traditional clothing; shorts and sleeveless tops are not suitable. Remove footwear at the entrance.
- Non-Hindus may not be allowed into some inner sanctums, including at Srirangam; the outer enclosures can still be explored.
- At the Rockfort, footwear is left at the base and the rock steps can get hot – go early or late.
- Srirangam is large; agree on a meeting point with your driver before you enter.
