Yercaud is a small hill station in the Shevaroy Hills of Salem district, at about 1,515 metres above sea level. It is quieter and less developed than Ooty or Kodaikanal, and that is its appeal: a lake in the middle of town, winding roads through coffee plantations, and viewpoints that look straight down on the plains of Salem.
For travellers based in Pondicherry, it is also the most practical hill escape. At around 237 km, you can leave after breakfast and be in cool air by mid-afternoon, which makes a two-day weekend trip realistic.

Why visit Yercaud
Coming from the coast, the change in temperature is the first thing you notice. Even in April and May, when Pondicherry is hot and humid, daytime maximums in Yercaud are typically below 30°C and evenings are comfortable. In winter, nights are cool enough for a light jacket.
Yercaud suits families who want a short, easy break, couples looking for a quiet stay among the trees, and anyone who prefers a slower hill town without the crowds of the better-known stations. It does not have big attractions; it has good air, gentle walks and pleasant drives.

Yercaud Lake
Also called Emerald Lake, this natural lake sits in the centre of town with a boat house run by the state tourism department. Rowing and pedal boats are available at the time of writing. Anna Park and the deer park are next to it, so this is where most visits start.
Lady's Seat, Gent's Seat and Children's Seat
A group of rocky viewpoints on the western edge of the plateau look over the ghat road and the Salem plains. On a clear evening you can watch the lights of Salem come on below. There is a telescope house at Lady’s Seat.
Pagoda Point and Servarayan Temple
Pagoda Point, on the eastern side, is named after stone pyramids piled by local tribal communities, and now has a small Rama temple. Servarayan Temple, a cave shrine at about 1,628 metres, is the highest point in Yercaud and the focus of a local festival in May.
Killiyur Falls
A short but steep walk leads down to this waterfall, fed by the overflow from the lake. It is worth the effort only after the monsoon, roughly from August to December; in summer it can be almost dry. The path is slippery after rain, so wear proper shoes.

A realistic plan from Pondicherry

- Day 1: Leave Pondicherry by 7 am. Drive via Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Attur to Salem, then take the ghat road up. Check in, boat on the lake and watch the sunset from Lady’s Seat.
- Day 2: Morning at Pagoda Point and Servarayan Temple, a drive on the loop road through the estates, Killiyur Falls if it is flowing, then descend after lunch and reach Pondicherry by evening.

Best time to visit and weather
Yercaud is pleasant for most of the year. November to February is cool and clear, with cold nights. March to June is warm but still far more comfortable than the plains, and the Yercaud Summer Festival, organised by the state government, usually takes place in May with flower shows and events. Heavy rain falls between August and October, when the hills are green and the falls flow, but views can disappear in mist.
Weekends and school holidays bring visitors from Salem, Bengaluru and Chennai, so book rooms early for those dates.
How to reach Yercaud from Pondicherry
By road
The standard route is Pondicherry – Villupuram – Ulundurpet – Kallakurichi – Attur – Salem – Yercaud. The final climb from Salem is a ghat road of about 30 km with around 20 hairpin bends; drivers used to hill roads make it much easier, especially for anyone prone to motion sickness. There is a second, less-used road from the Kuppanur side.
By train and air
Salem Junction is well connected by rail, but reaching Salem from Pondicherry by train needs a change at Villupuram, so road travel is usually simpler. Trichy and Coimbatore have the nearest airports with regular flights; Salem’s small airport has limited services.
Food and local produce
Yercaud has simple restaurants serving South Indian meals and a few hotels with multi-cuisine menus. The local speciality is produce rather than dishes: estate coffee, pepper, cardamom, oranges, jackfruit and honey sold in shops near the lake. On the way, Salem is known for its mangoes in season, and Salem’s non-vegetarian messes are popular with travellers.
