Yelagiri is a small hill plateau in Tirupathur district, in the north-west of Tamil Nadu, at about 1,410 metres. It is a cluster of 14 hamlets spread among orchards, farmland and forest, and much of the area is still wooded. There is no town centre in the way Ooty or Kodaikanal have one; instead there is a lake, a few viewpoints, some easy treks and a lot of quiet.
It is about 241 km from Pondicherry, a similar distance to Yercaud, and makes a good two-day break for families and friends who want cooler air and a slower pace without a very long drive.

Why visit Yelagiri
Yelagiri suits people who want to rest rather than tick off sights. The plateau is compact, so you spend very little of your stay in the car once you arrive. The climate is mild, the roads between the villages are pleasant to walk, and the resorts are mostly spread out among trees.
It is also the most accessible hill for light adventure in this part of Tamil Nadu. Trekking on Swamimalai is easy to arrange, and paragliding and other activities are offered in season. If you are coming from Pondicherry, the route also passes Tiruvannamalai, so you can add one of the great temples of the state to the trip.
Top things to see and do in Yelagiri
Punganoor Lake and nature park
This man-made lake is the main stop on the plateau, with a boat house, a garden and a nature park next to it that has a musical fountain and walking paths. It is busiest in the late afternoon and on weekends.
Swamimalai trek
Swamimalai is the highest hill in Yelagiri. The trail passes through forest and scrub and ends at a small temple with wide views over the plains. Allow two to three hours for the round trip and start early to avoid the midday sun. A local guide is useful if you are not familiar with the path.
Jalagamparai Falls
Jalagamparai is a waterfall on the edge of the plateau, reached by a drive and then a walk down a rough path; it is also the end point of a trek from Nilavur. It flows well only after good rain, roughly from September to December; in summer it may be a trickle. Take care on the wet rocks.
Adventure activities
Yelagiri is known for paragliding, and there are adventure camps offering rock climbing, zip lines and similar activities. Availability depends on the season, weather and the operator’s licences at the time, so treat these as a bonus rather than the reason for the trip, and confirm locally before you go.

A realistic plan from Pondicherry
Yelagiri is a comfortable two-day trip. A typical plan looks like this:
- Day 1: Leave Pondicherry early and drive via Tindivanam and Gingee to Tiruvannamalai for darshan at Arunachaleswarar Temple. Continue via Chengam and Tirupattur to the foot of the hills and climb the 14 hairpin bends. Evening at Punganoor Lake.
- Day 2: Morning trek on Swamimalai, visit the viewpoints and Jalagamparai if it is flowing, then drive back after lunch. Returning via Vellore adds the option of Vellore Fort.

Best time to visit and weather
Yelagiri is lower than the Nilgiris or Palani hills, so it is mild rather than cold. October to February is the most pleasant period, with cool nights and clear days. March to June is warm in the afternoons but still more comfortable than the plains, and the summer festival is held in May. The rainy months, especially September to November, make the plateau green and fill the waterfall, but trekking paths can be slippery.
Weekends bring visitors from Chennai and Bengaluru, so a weekday visit is noticeably quieter.
How to reach Yelagiri from Pondicherry
By road
The most interesting route runs Pondicherry – Tindivanam – Gingee – Tiruvannamalai – Chengam – Tirupattur – Ponneri, then up the ghat road. The alternative is via Vellore and Vaniyambadi on the highway. Both take around 5–6 hours. The ghat road is well built, with 14 hairpin bends, each named after a figure from classical Tamil literature, such as Kambar, Avvaiyar and the chieftain Pari.
By train and air
Jolarpettai Junction, about 19 km away, is on the Chennai–Bengaluru line, but reaching it from Pondicherry by rail is roundabout. Chennai and Bengaluru airports are each roughly three to four hours’ drive away. For travellers starting in Pondicherry, road travel is simplest.
Food in Yelagiri
Eating options are limited: most visitors eat at their resort, and there are a handful of small restaurants near the lake serving South Indian meals, biryani and snacks. Local jackfruit, guava and honey are sold at roadside stalls in season. On the way, Tiruvannamalai has good vegetarian restaurants near the temple, and Vellore and Ambur on the highway route are known for biryani.
