Valparai is a small hill town in Coimbatore district, at about 1,060 metres (3,500 feet) on the Anamalai hills of the Western Ghats. It is surrounded by tea and coffee estates – dozens of them – and by the forests of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, which makes it one of the best places in Tamil Nadu to see wildlife from the roadside.
Unlike Ooty or Kodaikanal, Valparai has no lake promenade or crowded bazaar. The appeal is the quiet: estate roads, misty viewpoints, cool evenings and the chance of meeting a herd of gaur or a troop of rare lion-tailed macaques. It is also one of the wettest places in Tamil Nadu, so the hills stay green for most of the year.

A little history
Planting on the Valparai plateau began in the mid-19th century with coffee. From the 1890s British planters, helped by the experienced planter G. A. Carver Marsh, opened up large tea and coffee estates, and the road up from the plains was laid out in the late 19th century. Much of the town today still belongs to the estates, with workers’ lines, factories and estate bungalows spread across the hills. The Aliyar dam at the foot of the ghat was inaugurated in 1962.
Things to see and do in Valparai
The Aliyar ghat road
The drive up is an experience in itself. From Aliyar dam, about 65 km from Coimbatore, the road climbs through 40 hairpin bends, each numbered. Stop at Loam’s viewpoint near the 9th bend for a sweeping view over the Aliyar reservoir and the plains. Nilgiri tahr are sometimes seen on the rock faces along this stretch. At the foot of the ghat, Aliyar dam has a park, an aquarium and boating run by the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Corporation, and Monkey Falls lies about 6 km from the dam.
Tea estates and viewpoints
Around town, roads wind through neatly clipped tea bushes shaded by silver oaks. The Nallamudi viewpoint, about 15 km from the bus stand, is reached by a short walk through a tea estate and looks out over deep valleys towards the Kerala hills; go early, before clouds roll in. Tea factories are working industrial sites and not always open to visitors, but your hotel may be able to arrange a visit.
Sholayar dam and Chinnakallar
The Sholayar dam, listed by the Valparai municipality as about 45 km from town, holds a large reservoir surrounded by forest, and is at its most impressive after the monsoon. Chinnakallar, about 14 km from the bus stand, is famous for its very high rainfall; a short trek with a hanging bridge leads to its waterfall. Closer to town, Birla Falls and the Nirar dam make short outings. Waterfalls and dam areas can be closed during heavy rain; follow local instructions.
Wildlife around Valparai
The Anamalai Tiger Reserve covers about 1,480 sq km, and Valparai’s estates lie in between its forest blocks. Elephants move through the plantations, especially at night, and gaur often graze near the roads in the evening. The endangered lion-tailed macaque lives in the rainforest fragments here, and a troop is often seen along the main road near the Puthuthottam estate. Great hornbills and Malabar giant squirrels are other highlights. Watch from your vehicle, never feed animals and keep a good distance from elephants.
Topslip
Topslip, in the northern part of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, is the reserve’s main tourism zone, with forest department safaris and an elephant camp. It is reached separately from Pollachi rather than from Valparai, so plan it as a half-day on the way up or down. Safari timings, bookings and closures change; check with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department before you go.

How to reach Valparai from Pondicherry
The usual route is Pondicherry – Villupuram – Salem – Coimbatore – Pollachi – Aliyar – Valparai, about 470 km. Pollachi to Valparai is about 65 km, including the ghat section. Because of the distance and the forest rules on the ghat, we recommend breaking the journey in Coimbatore or Pollachi and climbing the ghat in daylight.
There is also a scenic forest road from Valparai through Malakkappara to Athirappilly in Kerala. It passes through protected forest with checkposts and fixed opening hours, and a Tamil Nadu tourist car pays interstate permit charges at the border, so ask us before planning it.
E-pass and forest checkpost rules
At the time of writing, tourist vehicles going up to Valparai need an e-pass registered in advance, and the Forest Department checkpost at Aliyar restricts vehicle movement on the ghat road from evening until morning (reported as 6 pm to 7 am). Weekend vehicle numbers have also been capped. These rules have changed several times, so check the latest position with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department (forests.tn.gov.in) or the Coimbatore district administration before travelling.
Best time and weather
Valparai is pleasant all year, with days that rarely get hot. October to May brings the clearest views, and December to February has cool, crisp mornings. The southwest monsoon (June to September) brings very heavy rain, thick mist and lush scenery, along with leeches, occasional landslides and road closures. If you visit in the monsoon, carry rain gear and allow flexible timing.
