Pondy Marina is a sandy beach on the southern edge of Pondicherry town, at Vambakeerapalayam, close to the harbour and the new lighthouse. For years this was simply a fishing hamlet’s shoreline. In October 2016 the Puducherry government renamed it Pondy Marina as part of plans to turn it into a family beach, and it has since been redeveloped with walkways, lighting, food stalls and play areas.
It suits visitors who want actual sand in town, since the main Promenade Beach is lined with rocks. In the evening it fills with local families, snack stalls and children on rides; in the early morning it is quiet, with fishing boats pulled up on the shore.

What to do at Pondy Marina
- Walk on the sand: a broad beach with room to stroll and watch the waves.

Reports on entry charges vary, from free entry to a small ticket or charges for cameras and chairs, so check at the entrance. Food, rides and parking are paid separately. Hours and fees at developed beaches in Pondicherry can change, especially around festivals and holidays.
Best time to visit
For a peaceful walk, come at sunrise or soon after. For the lively, local scene, come between about 4:30 PM and 7:30 PM, when the stalls are open and families arrive after work and school. Weekends and holidays are crowded. Midday is hot and the sand has little shade.
November to March has the best weather. In the north-east monsoon season (roughly October to December), the sea is often rough.
Safety and practical tips
- Swimming: not recommended. The sea near the harbour has strong currents and waves; paddle only at the edge and keep children close.
- Footwear: sandals; the sand gets hot by late morning.
- Food hygiene: choose busy stalls where food is cooked fresh in front of you.
- Parking: there is parking near the beach, but it fills on weekend evenings. Our drivers drop you at the entrance and wait nearby.
- Cash and UPI: UPI payments are common in Pondicherry, but carry some cash for small stalls and rides.
- Respect the fishing community: don’t climb on boats or nets drawn up on the sand.
How to get there
Pondy Marina is about 3–4 km south of White Town, a 10–15 minute drive depending on traffic. Autos are easy to find in town for the trip there, but can be harder to get for the return late in the evening, which is one reason many visitors prefer a car with a driver who waits.
Nearby places
On the way you can stop at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Botanical Garden. The ancient port site of Arikamedu is a short drive south-west across the river. For swimming and quieter sand, head further south to Eden Beach or take the boat to Paradise Beach.
