Ousteri Lake, also called Oussudu or Osudu Lake, is the largest lake in Puducherry and one of the most important wetlands on this part of the Coromandel coast. It lies about 12 km west of Pondicherry town by road, beyond Villianur, straddling the border between Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.
For most visitors it offers something Pondicherry’s town and beaches don’t: wide open water, big skies and birds. In winter the lake fills with migratory ducks, storks, herons and waders, and a gentle boat ride or an early-morning walk along the bund is one of the most peaceful half-days you can have near the city.

About the lake
Ousteri is a large man-made irrigation tank, part of the old cascading system of tanks that fed paddy fields in the region. Medieval inscriptions at the Villianur temple record gifts of land and irrigation works linked to Ossudu lake in the 14th century.
The whole wetland covers roughly 800 hectares, of which about 390 hectares are in Puducherry. The Puducherry government declared its part the Oussudu Bird Sanctuary in 2008, and Tamil Nadu followed for its side in 2015. It is recognised as an Important Bird Area. Over the decades the lake has shifted from being mainly an irrigation source to a site managed for conservation.
What to see and do
- Birdwatching: painted storks, open-billed storks, white ibises, herons, egrets and several kinds of ducks are among the birds reported here, with numbers peaking in the winter months.
- Boating: the tourism department’s boat club offers short and longer rides on the lake. A ride gives a real sense of the lake’s size.
- Walk the bund: the embankment offers open views across the water, especially at sunrise.
- Photography: water lilies, reflections and bird flocks make good subjects; a zoom lens helps.
Timings and fees
At the time of writing there is no entry fee for the lake itself. Boating is reported from about 9 AM to 5 or 6 PM, with short rides of around 15 minutes from about ₹100 per person and longer rides at higher rates. Boating depends on water levels and can stop in the dry months or bad weather. Check locally before you go.
Best time to visit
The best season is roughly November to March, after the north-east monsoon has filled the lake and migratory birds have arrived. Early morning, from sunrise to about 9 AM, is best for birdlife and light. In the hot months (April to June) water levels can drop sharply and there are far fewer birds. Plan an hour and a half to two hours.
Practical tips
- Binoculars: bring a pair; many birds keep to the far side of the water.
- Quiet please: keep noise down and don’t chase or feed birds.
- Sun and insects: hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellent are essential; there is little shade on the bund.
- Footwear: closed shoes are better than sandals on muddy edges.
- Facilities: limited. Carry water and snacks, and take your rubbish back.
- Parking: available near the boat club. Our drivers wait there while you walk or take a boat.
