Kovalam is a beach town on the coast about 16 km south of central Thiruvananthapuram, and roughly 10 km from the city’s airport. Rocky headlands divide the shore into small crescent bays, with palm-covered slopes behind them and a lighthouse standing on the southern headland.
It has been a holiday spot for a long time. In the late 1920s the Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore built the Halcyon Castle here as a seaside retreat, European guests of the Travancore court followed, and in the 1970s Kovalam became a stop on the hippie trail. Today it is a full-scale resort with hotels, Ayurveda centres and seafood restaurants.

The beaches of Kovalam
Kerala Tourism describes three main crescent-shaped beaches, separated by rocky outcrops:
- Lighthouse Beach: the southernmost and busiest, below the lighthouse, with a paved promenade lined with cafés, hotels and shops. This is where most visitors swim and watch the sunset.
- Hawah Beach (Eve’s Beach): a smaller bay next to a high rocky promontory, also used by local fishermen. In the early morning you can watch boats coming in and nets being hauled.
- Samudra Beach: to the north, separated from the others by a large headland, quieter and lined with resorts; fishing boats also work from here.
Vizhinjam Lighthouse
The red-and-white striped lighthouse on Kurumkal hill, at the end of Lighthouse Beach, is about 36 metres tall and was commissioned in 1972. Visitors can climb to the top – partly by a lift, then up narrow, steep steps – for wide views over the bays and the coast towards Vizhinjam.
At the time of writing, it is open roughly 10 AM to 12:30 PM and 2 PM to 5 PM and usually closed on Mondays, with a small entry ticket. Hours and fees change, so check before you go.
Ayurveda in Kovalam
Kovalam is one of Kerala’s main centres for Ayurveda tourism. Around the beaches you will find everything from small massage centres to large resorts that run residential treatment programmes of one to several weeks. For a simple relaxing massage, a short session is enough; for proper treatments, choose a centre with qualified Ayurveda doctors, a consultation before treatment and clear information about the programme, and book in advance.
Sea safety and tips
- Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and stay within the flagged area. Currents and waves can be strong, especially during the south-west monsoon (about May to September), when swimming is often not allowed.
- Rocks: do not climb on the wet rocks around the headlands; waves can sweep across them.
- Dress: swimwear is accepted on the main beaches, but cover up when you walk into town or visit temples.
- Best light: sunsets over Lighthouse Beach are the classic view; early mornings are quiet and good for photographs of the fishing boats.
- Beach food: choose busy restaurants for seafood, and confirm the price by weight before your fish is cooked.
Visiting from Pondicherry
Kovalam is roughly 600 km from Pondicherry, about 11–12 hours by road via Madurai, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil, so break the journey at Madurai or Kanyakumari, which is around two hours from Kovalam. Kovalam combines well with Varkala to the north and with Thiruvananthapuram’s palaces and museums. Ask us to add a beach stay to the Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari tour or the Kerala coast tour.
